First Time breeding my Male - Page 1

I have owned dogs for years but this is a newbie question.
I have a beautiful male with great confirmation and hips. I met someone through a friend that has a female that he wants to breed with my male. They both just turned two and it will be the first breeding for both. Any comments on how we should have them meet. Should it be in her yard or his? Should they meet on neutral ground? Or am I all worried over nothing?

If you guys are new to breeding then I would strongly suggest that you find a reproductive specialist vet who knows what they're doing and have experience in canine reproduction. Be sure before the bitch is bred to do a pre-breeding workup that includes; brucellosis (Very important!) A vaginal culture and senstivity test. I would also do a whole physical exam on the bitch to determine if shes 100% healthy prior to breeding. I would require that the bitch owner does a progesterone test to determine that the bitch is having a normal heat and has ovulated.

Out of curiosity.. Are both dogs titled? have OFA/SV hip/elbow certification? Do both have conformation ratings? you mention that your male has great conformation. What is the main purpose for breeding these dogs? 

i would not breed two first timers together.
you always find and experience dog to use with a first timer.
you are just asking for trouble.
i have experience with this.
when you do decide , i would say to bring the female to the male.
his territory.

and I believe you meant "conformation" not "confirmation"

Please research all the GSD Rescues out there before bringing yet another litter into the world.  At least have a plan and a reason for the litter besides just having two purebred dogs.

There's a lot to think about with breeding dogs which others have touched on. Does the owner of the female already have people lined up who want puppies from his dog? What will happen to any puppies that don't sell?  Is the breeder of either your dog or the female willing to help out and advise you? You'll need advice with two first time dogs. Some first time females want nothing to do with a male and things don't go smoothly. Some first time males are put off when the female doesn't cooperate. Do both dogs have their OFA certification? Many GSD puppy buyers today know to ask about OFA certificates and want the puppies' parents to be at least fair or better. Have you researched your dog's pedigree and the female's pedigree to see what kind of inbreeding you might be doing? Aside from making a nice picture of two beautiful dogs, what do these two dogs have that you want to see in their puppies? What kind of strengths and weaknesses does each dog have and are those things genetic?  If you can answer these questions, you'll have a better idea of whether you want to breed or not.

Because you do not know the female's owner (and by  implication, you do not know the female either) and because both dogs are first timers, you could consider AI.  That puts the onus on the bitch owner to do the progesterone testing, reduces the risk of exposure for your male to any number of nasties an rules out any accidents that could injure your male.  It also gives you the opportunity to have the sperm evaluated.  If the bitch fails to conceive and you know that your male provided viable sperm it gives one less thing to investigate.

Do what you want, but I wouldn't do it.

Two teenagers having sex, is basically what that is. Could go okay for the dogs, but if I were you, I wouldn't do it.
