Janette

I was wondering if any of you have experienced your litter having diarrea the first time you worm them? I worm them at about 4-5 weeks old.A few days after I start weaning them. I use fenbendazole 1ml per 4 lbs.I also do the bitch which they are still nursing on a couple times a day.

I worm my puppies at 2 weeks, 4 weeks and 6 weeks old using Panacur liquid 10% (Fenbendazole)I give 1ml per 2kg bodyweight for 3 consecutive days. I also worm the bitch at the same time with either drontol or milbemax worming tables(one of dose each time) never had any problems.

Janette, I think that deworming them at 4 weeks is quite late. By that time, they are full of worms already. Deworming and getting rid of all these adult worms probably causes that diarrhea. I just dewormed mine with Nemex and they will be three weeks old in a couple of days. I will do it again in about 10 days. Afterwards, every 2 weeks until they move on to their new homes.

When they start diarreah at this age, don't overlook cocci. Pretty common for cocci to hit them about this age.

I agree with Silbersee. I start my first deworming at 10 days old, then every 8 days, until the puppies leave for their new homes.

I dewormed my pups at 2 1/2 weeks with Panacur, and thereafter every 10 days till they leave the house. I also let the bitch choose when to wean the pups off, at a point it starts to hurt her and she will push them away. Once that happens i will deworm her. As long as the diarreah (spelling ?) is not there constantly iam not to much concerned. I have not seen a baby or animal yet that had regular stool at all times.

I was always a little concerned that I might be giving the wormer to early or to often.(over medicating) But what I have now considered is that maybe ridding the worms before they reach adulthood may be a better option. Not so hard on the babies digestive system. Am I correct in assuming that when you start feeding solid food that the worms grow? Thanks for your input.
