Hi,I would appreciate someone clearing this question for me,I know there is a breeder out there who can.I know working line dogs from West germany don't show and are only bred for sport, police, etc.but since West German show lines must be titled to be registered wouldn't they be considered working dogs as well?I mean the ones papered in Germany.

If one follows the SV system, whether working or showlines, then they must show, title, and Kör. The main difference comes when you select what you're priorities are in the breed. Showlines show...placing well in conformation shows is their highest priority. Working dogs trial...placing emphasis on working ability is their priority. When you select your priorities, the other aspect tends to dim some.

this is the most confusing aspect of the SV system. There are absolute criteria which must be met in Germany, and which most of the World Union of German Shepherd clubs - with the exception of the AKC's GSDCA - follow to the most extent in breeding practices. WGR working lines - or Euro working lines, as Belgium, the Netherlands and the Nordic countries all co-mingle - do show and koer their dogs. But they do not view the show ring as a sport, but as a breeding critereia which must be met...and the schutzhund title is used in the show lines as a breeding criteria which must be met...the two groups diverge and each does their "sport" in a different venue. Thus the common terminology of "show lines" and "working lines" is used and based on the sport in which the types concentratate upon.

OK, so if I have a dog from parents both titled but are also show winners(seiger) is she considered a working line or show line?

by MikeRussell on 14 April 2006 - 16:04

If the dog is a Sieger from a major national conformation event, then it's showlines. If the dog is Sieger from a major national working/sport event, then the dog is working lines. If the dog is a DDR Sieger, then it probably is DDR working lines (there was less differentiation then, so it's a bit murky to deciphyer, but they have more in common with the working lines than they do with the showlines).

If your dog is black and red/tan, and both parents are black and red/tan, V rated, KKL1 and have notations of "BSZS" then you have a showline dog. The word "sieger" merely means "champion" - the V1 dog at any show [or HIT dog at a trial] is the show [trial] Sieger....the "Sieger Show" is basically the National Championship show of the Country where it is held - and "THE Sieger Show" is of course, the German National Championship! I am guessing you have a showline dog, as it is commonly sold - esp in the States - as a "working showline dog".... I guess to differentiate it from an AKC/Domestic lined "show dog"....!

I have been around both Seiger lines and East German DDR (which I have one now) and Czech and Slovack. Several differences are alot of the working lines are sable, black sable, etc, solid black and Bi-color. They are some what shorter, thicker and have more of what's called a "block" head. Drives are more extreme and many of them are alot "harder" than the Seiger or show lines. One way I was told by a highly respected Seiger line breeder was that while doing protection work if you accidently hit the dog the show line would quit while the working lines would get more intense. Of course I have seen many exceptions on both sides but on average this holds true. As one of the other posts said whichever you breed for you tend to dim or lose the traits of the other side. Just my opinion hope it helps.
