I recently had a neighbour who had their 5-year old German shepherd dog put down due to liver failure. The dog was completely healthy until a few weeks ago. They had a necropsy done to see what the cause was. The liver levels were unbelievable, as if the dog had ingested poison of some kind. The dog is kept inside, and when he's outside, someone's with him, so the idea of him getting into something unknown was hard to believe. My neighbour started going through all the items in the house. When he got to the Swiffer Wetjet,he noticed, in very tiny print, a warning, which stated, "may be harmful to small children and animals." He called the company to ask what the contents of the cleaning agent are and was astounded to find out that antifreeze is one of the ingredients. (Actually he was told it's a compound which is one molecule away from antifreeze). Therefore, just by the dog walking on the floor cleaned with the solution, then licking its own paws; it ingested enough of the solution to destroy its liver. Soon afterhis dog's death, his housekeepers' two cats also died of liver failure. They both used the Swiffer Wetjet for quick cleanups on their floors.

This is an email that was circulated MONTHS ago. It is NOT true. http://www.snopes.com/critters/crusader/swiffer.asp

That's one of those urban legends. It's been rebutted on the internet a number of times. Do a google search for the details. I'd be more inclined to ask if he was eating Diamond dog food.

Glad to hear it NOT true. Got this email from a friend this morning and I was concerned, we used Swifer Wetjet. I know, long comsuming of antifreeze will KILL YOU. Better be SAFE than SORRY.

I've also heard of cases in Germany and Switzerland that claimed Swiffer caused liver failure in cats and dogs. Apparently proved cases! I think that pet owners are better off with a bucket of water and a bit of vinegar than spending rediculous amounts of money for chemical garbage to pseudo-clean the floors!

There are so many things that can cause liver failure.... onions, for instance(since you mentioned the dog was an inside dog)..Diamond dog food is another good choice.... You mentioned a necropsy and liver values, but I'd be more interested in what all the organs looked like.. was it a normal liver, maybe a tumor.... I am sorry this happened to them..... lost a dog to kidney failure at 7 1/2 - she had just been bred, we had no idea until she started vomiting and then it was all over.. her kidneys were misshapen with masses.. necropsy determined it was renal amyloidosis.... amyloids are produced by the immune system and when it goes out of whack they are are overproduced and calcify and collect whereever - in her case it was her kidneys... we were devastated, one minute I was breeding her - a couple days later I was running 3 bags a fluids a day via iv catheter.... and losing the battle drip by drip..

DKiah: It's sad to hear of your dog's illness....but this original post was an email that went around the net quite awhile ago....this is an 'urban legend' as Blitzen stated. If you go to the link I posted in my first response, you will see the exact email that was posted here, and after 'snopes' researched it, they found it to be false! That website is great to research other emails and claims to find out weather they are true or not! :)

The uban myth notwithstanding, I thought antifreeze destroyed the kidneys. Stephen

Stephen it is tue, antifreeze affects the kidneys.... Soothsayer, my recount of my personal story was just an attempt to show my empathy towards what these people went thru losing their dog... it was coincidental that it involved kidney failure ..... I did not intend to link the kidney failure with the swiffer story.. sorry if it appeared that way I use the urban legend website ALL the time, before I will forward any of those "this is so important you mmust forward to everyone you know" emails!
