Does ED-fast normal mean that that dog has elbow dysplasia? And if not what does it mean? Thanks in advance. Mysti

Fast normal means that the dogs hips is ok but not the best. A normal means their in excellent condition.

ED-fast normal or ED-b means elbows are almost normal. The ED ratings that are passing grades and acceptable for both KKL and breeding are: ED-a(normal) ED-b(fast normal-almost normal) ED-c(noch zugelassen - still accepted). Some people call anything less than perfect dysplastic, however that is a matter of interpretation IMO. Especially since one cannot rule out outside influences other than genetics, and also more importantly human error in the way an x-ray was taken or how it was evaluated. If you get an OFA rating back, often the three vets examining the x-ray have different opinions, the average opinion then makes up the actual OFA rating. Or have a dog re-x-rayed and re-evaluated if you do not agree with the OFAs first opinion. Often an new x-ray brings different results. So - not a perfect science. Many people refer to the ED grades the same way as the hips though, from a1 to a3. Basically means the same as from a to c. It it similar to the OFA ratings from excellent, to good, to fair, all of which are passing grades.

The OFA does not grade passing elbow quality-it only grades the level of dysplasie; using "level 1, level 2, and "level 3". A dog with passing elbows does not receive a score as he would for hip quality-the elbows are indicated as "normal". I know the hip scoring comparisons between the FCI, the BV, the S.V. and the OFA, and have to presume that an S.V. ED fast Normal would be equivilent to an OFA finding of "level 1" dysplasie or even "level 2" dysplasie. The OFA admits that elbows are much harder to score than hips because of the complexity of the joint. They state that they often use a much stronger light source than the one used for hips. Should the dog be bred with "a" fast Normal ED? It is probably okay as long as the mate is "a" Normal or OFA Normal. Just my opinion. Bob-O
