Janette

by Janette on 31 May 2009 - 18:05

I just had a pup born with no tail. She is only an hour old, so far and appears normal.Time will tell. Anyone else experience this. This is the first time for me in 12 years of breeding.

does she have all her other parts? anus?  I have seen pups born with no tails but they also didn't have an anus either.  different breed though.

some breeds are naturally born without tails, several other herding breeds plus generally 1/2 of my schipperke litters are born without tails.

aussies are born with anywhere from a stup to a full length tail.

I would be on the way to the vet and let him dispose of this pup...sorry but that is the rule...He probably has no anus and mess up testicles and undeveloped genetics in the reproductive....not a chance to take...better to  do it now ...This is  the part of breeding most people do not like..but it is your responsibility...

This is not an Aussie,,,it ia a   SERIOUS birth defect.

Well said Yellowrose.  If one considers themselves a "Breeder" then they should accept the responsibility that goes along with that privilege. ecs

Then there was the person with sixteen pups in a litter.

how long does it take to know if this viable? a week, two weeks?

if it has no anus, or other problems, have it put down - don't let it suffer.......

if indeed, the pup is normal except tail....... spay/castrate it before it leaves the house and find a good home for it to live for free........and never have another litter with same male/female combination..........

I'm going to have such a difficult time with this type of thing.........its going to be sooooo difficult..........

on second thought
maybe yr is correct end it now before you get attached.......it might be easier.........

I am not a breeder like you guys are, but just reading here I would agree with Sitas, spaying/castrate and find a good home for the pup. I don't think it should be put down just because of the tail but if there are indeed going to be far reaching medical problems then maybe that would be the most humane thing. Just my 2 cents for what it's worth. Good luck and I sure hope he/she is going to be okay!

For those that are saying to pts. Would you stick with your opinion even if the vet ruled out any medical reason to do so? In other words if the missing tail was the ONLY thing wrong with the pup?
If there is a medical reason then yes I would have the puppy pts to avoid any suffering.
I'm not sure I could do that if the missing tail was the only thing wrong though.  If the pup was viable, I'd def. get it neutered asap then placae in a good home or just keep myself.
