I have recently had to euthanize my 14 year old female shepherd and I lost my 4 year old female earlier this week to a tragic accident. I did alot of research on my 4 year old and she was a considerable investment. I considered myself just lucky on my older dog. We are looking to add a shepherd to our family again. We have 7 yr and 6 month old sons, and two cats. I can't afford a puppy from the same line as my 4 year old was (my husband won't let me make that kind of investment again) and with all that said up front- I was wondering a few things. What are the odds of me finding a bitch that will fit into our family and has the potential of doing some tracking (search and rescue) or some Schutzhund work for less than $1000? If a dog has very good drive, how much am I going to have to worry about it around my crawling baby and active 7 year old? I really like getting a little older puppy or young adult dog- does anyone have any tips on finding one? Any input would be appreciated.

I would start with a puppy no older than four months. Then you can teach it the manners you would like to see in it. Younger would be better since they haven't had much time to develop bad habits like jumping up but you would have to do the housebreaking of course. It's a give and take thing. What state are you located in? Are you looking for a breeding dog or solely at pet who can work? I know a few breeders in the USA who breed dogs for working ability. If you don't mind shipping I will list the ones I like and if you don't I'll list the ones that are close to you. I hate to say it but one of the best I know of also breeds hybrids. I can give you them if this doesn't bother you. It bothers me. I also recommend asking the GSDCA for a breeder that they recommend in your area. They may even be able to find one within your price range with the same lines as your bitch. Keep in mind, if they did, it would be a puppy as noone is going to let a high quality adult bitch with good lines and a ton of potential go for $1000. If they do, run!

I am located in West Virginia and I am not looking to breed. I would like to know more about fostering- how common is it?
