I saw this advertised on somebody's website, that their dog had a GSDCA Health Award.  Does anybody know what it is?  Do they still give it out and what are the requirements to get one?  I did a search and looked on the GSDCA website, but didn't find anything.

It is still given out. I believe the requirements are that the dog pass OFA Hip, Elbow, Heart, Thyroid (and maybe CERF Eyes I still have to confirm). I will be getting this Award of Merit on two of my own dogs this year. It is the minimum testing I do on my own breeding dogs anyway so why not get the merit??

Tina, I congratulate you on going these extra steps to insure the health of your dogs.

Are any of these mandatory requirements of the GSDCA to recieve their highest awards of Select and Grand Victor.

Thanks,
Rik

Thanks Rik. I am a person who has no problem removing any dog from my program if their health is in question (Hips, Elbows, Heart, Eyes, Thyroid, and now I have done the newer "DM" DNA test). This is why I only have two intact dogs in my house of several! LOL

To answer your question, I have no idea. I have German Work Line Dogs (therefore do not show in AKC Conformation). I only participate in the GSDCA for the ATAA Program (awards credits to parents of sport & working titled offspring) and more recently the Health Award Program.

If we have an GSDCA members who do "show", maybe they can answer for you. i do think they have to do hips but not sure about anything else.

Tina
