has anyone had any experience with split cycles.
my female bleed for two days  and then stopped, i was told she is having a split heat cycle she has never had one before.
she did come in at 5 months this time and she will usually go 7-8 months.
i did not breed her last time either.
was intrested  if any one has had this experience too.
and how long it takes for them to come back in.
thanks

A very good friend has a bitch with split heat cycles, although she goes further into her cycle than yours.

He was planning to artificially inseminate her so she was taken to a "reproduction specialist" (in Tennessee) who throughly examined her inside and out.

The vet told him that she would come back into heat in approximately 2 months. This was correct almost to the date.

When the vet was surgically implanting the semen, she found a cyst in one tube, which she feels may be responsible for the split heat. The bitch was implanted and appears to be pregnant, too soon to tell 100%.

Hope this helps,
Rik

thanks very much,
that really does help.
i guess i will wait and see how things go.
its only been 2 weeks. since she has bled.
she has always had good normal cycles.
i have had a friend that has had a female with split cycles,
and she has never been able to be bred.
i really dont know much about this and have never heard of too many dogs that get this,

thanks

I had a stress-induced split heat cycle for a dominant female once in 2005. I had taken her to the vet for a brusc test when she was just coming in heat. Then I was informed the vet had to send away the sample and it was gonna be 7 days before they were gonna have me a result for my brusc. In the meanwhile, she was quickly coming toward standing heat. So, I had to take her to another local vet who did bruscellosis testing in-house and get it redone (I couldn't wait for the first!). Once we got the results, I headed straight up to the stud dog's residence and I was SURE she was still bleeding-I'd wiped her just prior to heading to the stud dog's residence 3 hrs away. During that next week, instead of proceeding to come on into heat and get bred, she decided to just QUIT and went completely out-stopped bleeding, everything. Both the stud dog owner and myself were shocked. So, I drove back up and got her from the stud dog's residence with nothing to show for the efforts. About 6 weeks later, she began to bleed, came into a full normal heat, was bred t my own male and had 7 pups. No prob.
That was the only 'split' heat she ever had. But, I never put her thru stress like that when coming into heat ever again-I learned the lesson. :o)

I have one female that nearly always has a split heat. The real heat comes 3-4 weeks later, she goes from 6-8 months between cycles and has always been difficult to get pregnant. She is 6 years old and has had only two litters despite trying many more times. We had a US scan recently and she does not appear to have any cysts or obvious abnormalities.

I also have a bitch that was bred 14 months ago, came back in heat at the exact predicted time, (she was not bred that heat),  this time as per normal she swelled then started to bleed, then my alpha bitch came on heat so this first bitch went off.
She remained swollen and my male was not bothered by her.
After the alpha bitch went off another bitch came in and now it has been 2 months and this 1st bitch still has not been on heat and she is no longer swollen.
She is 4 years old and has always had 6 month cycles that are perfectly normal.
My thoughts were that she went off because the higher ranked females came in at the same time as her ??????????

i would love to say it was from another female , but i only have her and my male.
he is very intrested in her, but he has never been bred, he is young yet at 15 months.
thanks all you guys for such good information on your experiences, it really gives me  alot of ideas.
well i will wait and see how things go.
i hate this waiting game.
she is 3 1/2 years old.
always had good cycles till now.
its hard to do anything with her, when it come to showing  with AKC.

bea, after writing yesterday I am happy to say that my bitch this morning was really acting up and I couldn't understand why so I checked her and sure enough she is back in full heat again so I hope that she will progress normally this time.

from what i have heard the second time is the real heat.
i hope everything goes right  with your girl this time.
i wish you luck.
in the mean time i will be waiting for jasmine to come back in.
it can be from 2 weeks to 2 months  , from what i am hearing.
i guess each female is different.
its going to drive me nuts, waiting and having to deal with a female in heat, more her bitchiness than the blood with me.

good luck

Well it was 2 months for my girl.
I had no intentions of breeding her this heat as I bred my alpha bitch 5 weeks ago but had her to the vet for a check this am and she is not in whelp so if things progress as they should this time around, I will breed her now instead of my planned November/December breeding for her.
I agree I hate the bitchiness, I always separate my bitches when they are on heat, Prime time for a fight !!!
Good Luck with Jasmine, I hope she doesn't keep you waiting too long. Are you going to breed her?
