Anybody has any suggestion about what measures one should exercise when a young female comes into her heat first time.

by gsdtrotter on 11 November 2005 - 10:11

Just keep her away from the males. DONT BREED HER.

Good advice! I have to add: REALLY keep her away from the males! Don't let her hang around your yard alone, even if it is fenced-in - males will find their way...

treat her normal. but do not throw caution to the wind. hah !

I've had a dog get pregnant THROUGH the chain link fence. It's best to only let her out with you on a leash. She may decide that since the males aren't with her to go to them. Never breed on the first heat. She's still a baby and needs to finish growing first.

Make sure that she stays in a clean, dry place. No swimming or bathing during the heat cycle because of the risk of uterine infection (Pyometria).

males will also destroy crates to get at a female, so don't think you're in the clear by having her crated either. i have 3 bitches in season right now.....what a circus around here!!!! :) :) :)

My young bitch (8 months)is in her first heat cycle as well. I have an intact male in my household as well, so very paronoid. I've even pulled some progesterone levels (I work for a vet) on her to see, when I need to lock her in an ivory tower away from my male! Like you say, she's never outside alone. So, far my male isn't going "crazy" so far, but I'm guessing that this weekend should be fun! She's at like day 12 now. Kathy

You can take a pair of men's underwear or a very large pair of women's and cut a hole for her tail to come through and have her wear those. It does keep the blood right next to her fur so some baby wipes to clean her are a must but it will keep the male out. No baths during heats as that can lead to infection. Change out the doggie undies three to four times a day to prevent infection.
