i have read about not feeding garlic and onions to german shepherd or more commonly, any dog for that matter. however, i have been advised by my dog to feed some quantity of both in cooked food, like along with meat, chicken, pulses, soybean etc. Is this advisable for dogs who are not gaining weight? or, is it wrong to feed these two things to dogs especially gsd's? Also, are pulses good for dogs? if not, what are the ill effects if any? or how does it affect a gsd? Can anyone also advice me on percentage of fat, protein and carbs that shud b fed to a gsd & how much is over the required percentage in a dog? thanks for any advice in advance.

You were told correctly about onions. Check out the site and it will tell you why. There is no benefit from feeding onions so why take a chance with your loved pet? Garlic in small quantities is not a problem. Actually many vets will recommend it in addition to flea treatments to keep pests off. A tiny sprinkle of garlic powder on their food can help keep fleas, ticks, flies, and mosquitoes from bothering your dog. Just don't over do it. I'm honestly not sure what a pulse is but if it's meat it's fine. As to the weight gain, does he look thin or is he just small? If he's in good weight then don't try to force him to gain. You'll just make him fat. A good quality large breed dog food should be enough. The second link will give you a better idea of what not to feed your dog. Keep in mind when it says chicken bones that raw chicken and turkey bones can be fed safely and are used by alot of people who feed the BARF diet as a staple. http://www.jlhweb.net/Boxermap/onions.html http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?cls=2&cat=1939&articleid=1030 ~Erica~

thanks for the advice angel. Well pulses are the edible seeds of certain pod-bearing plants, such as peas and beans! Along with that things like wheat grains...we usually call them daal in india. Yeah, my dog is kinda skinny as compared to the ones I have seen with many breeders across the internet & near my place. He does not put up any fat although I have been feeding him beef, mutton, chicken along with green vegetables. That is that area of my concern. I will look up those links in my free time. Thanks again
