I had the fur saver on Zambi for few months... or more... I've notice where the fursaver was laying that i couldn't help but to notice that her neck part of her fur is somewhat uneven... before i even put the fursaver on that her neck area was even. It seemed like the fur saver did not do what it's suppose to do by saving the fur from damages.... I was wondering have anybody else who uses/used the fur saver on their dogs ever experience the same thing to their dogs?

No problem with fur savers. I use them on all my dogs. How is Zambi's ear, have you had any more problems with it?

Hudson, Zambis ear is doing better. Im still medicating the ear just to make sure that the bacterial infection doesn't somehow grow back by 1 little tiny particle thats still inside of her ear. I will probably take her to the vets within a week or two to determine if i should completely stop the medications and to make sure that the bacterial infection is 100% gone :) Thanks for the concern :)

Brittany, I had a dog with the same problem. I treated it with the maximum dose of Baytril for a month and used Zymox ear drops for a month, and washed her ear weekly with an alkalinizing flush. I am still washing the ear weekly. The Zymox is an antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal. No reoccuring problems.

Fur savers when left on for extended periods of time will damage fur. The result is a ring of fur that is rough or split at the ends similar to what you described. A regular nylon collar would break the hair off about 3/8 inch long leaving a ring that looked sheared around her neck.

I believe that fur savers are not meant to be left on all the time, if I am not mistaken they are choke collars, so it would be dangerous anyway to leave them on an unsupervised dog? Our dogs only wear collars for training or outings.

I don't leave fur savers on for that reason - they do rub/break the hair around that area of the neck. As do "flat" leather or nylon collars. Normally my dogs don't wear any collars at all unless being handled/trained etc. My young dogs or any dogs I like to leave name-tags on, wear thinner nylon collars and their coats seem fine. Rolled leather also does not seem to damage the hair-coat around the neck either. molly

Hudson, I use the same medication, Baytril :) I use the drops, not the oral dose, However when the infection was severe ( to the point that you couldnt even touch the ear) we were treating her both oral and ear drops, not to mention an anti flammatory medication. The ear flush that i'm using is epi-otic (virbac). I ususally grab few cotton balls... squirt some of the epiotic onto the cotton balls and start cleaning out her ear.. after I do that i flush it out... to make sure that i got everything out... I then put the final touching and that is the baytril. I do it about about approx 2 to 3 times per a week... now that its going away :) I was also using Zymox on zambi... that was one of the first things i tried to get rid of the Pseudomonas aeruginosa ( the bacterial that she had). Her infection was too severe to the point that i wasn't going to play the guessing games with what she has so i just took her to the vets to get it checked out. Dog1, that explains it.. Guess we shouldn't be calling it fur savers anymore, eh?!?! thought it was designed for exactly for that purpose, to save the fur from getting all damage up ;/ Molly, Howdy there :) I have thought about getting the rolled leather collars for my dogs... i live in the city so i need to have the collars on with their tags, etc to clarfiied that they've been vaccinated... even some parks will not let us go in without the proper tags.

I just do not use one unless the dog is going out someplace on leash.I found pretty much any type left on for extended periods of time will have some effect on the dogs coat, fur savers I find to be best among steel collars but again not for extended periods of time

I never leave a collar on my dogs when they are in the house our kennel. I prefer a fur saver becuase it's easy to get a lead on a dog in a hurry.
