We have a 1 1/2 yr old male out of showlines and are considering a female puppy out of working pedigree.  how much more work is to be expected?? Is walking two at a time difficult, can they share a kennel at night etc.. looking for some insight. I would like to put a Sch title on the female. My male just doesn't have the temperment.

Are you looking to breed the pair at some time?

by GSDVINCE on 31 July 2009 - 19:07

Dogs will never be bred.... definitely not to each other. My male is not breed quality.

That's not really an easy answer.  I'd like to say double.  I mean, that is the easy answer, but all dogs are different.
You say your male doesn't have the temperment and I could take that 20 different ways.  Is he like Flash from the dukes of hazzard and lies around all day?  Is he very active , but has no courage or nerve?
I guess the point is that it depends on the dogs.  A good Schutzhund dog is time consuming in itself, so it may be more than double what you are used to.  Are you prepared to spend a minimum of 3-5 hrs tracking,  around 3 hrs doing obedience and atleast one day at a club every week?  I'm just asking because even if it is easy to walk the two of them, the sport dog is going to require more of an outlet than a stroll.

It's not double it's triple,
-Watching dog 1
-Watching dog 2
-and then them both at the same time.

It's fun but it can get over the top.

I hate walking my  both dogs at the same time (but than i train my dogs off leash) lol

A lot of work. Your puppy should NOT stay in the same kennel overnight nor should it be taken for every walk with your other dog. The new puppy will need time to bond to YOU, not your other dog, so you can't let them be together around the clock.

My girls are a year apart, with a variety of titles between them. At times it was very tiring and hectic. I would not do it that way again, to be honest, if I could avoid it. In the future I will shoot for 2-4 years apart.

4 times the work, if not more

but well worth it!

Usually not double. More than two, or 2+ that can't be kept together most of the time, and you start multiplying the work load geometrically. 1 - 1.  2 = 1.5-2,  3 = 4-5,  5 = 7+, etc.
I am on the road with 5.  3 males, 2 females. One female is in heat.
Walk one male and one female together ONLY when there is no danger (fenced area, not dark, no traffic, etc)
Walk 2 males and one female seperately. Repeat several times each 24 hrs. Sorry, nights too... They aren't in any hurry to do their business, either. They know as soon as they finish they go back in the car. Why rush???
They don't care if you get any rest.
2 + 1 + 1 +1 = 7.

No. I have not embraced the sport of agility. I don't see my dogs trying it out on their own either. LOL
They DO like the plastic wading pool just out of the frame on the right.

If you're a crappy dog owner, precisely double.  Two times neglect is just double the old.

If you're lazier than that, MORE THAN DOUBLE, as you will have to cope with interactions, too.

If you're now a good dog owner (making up for your solo dog status by running to the dog park and making doggie dates and socializing like crazy with dogs as well as people) THEN ALL THOSE CHORES GO AWAY and it is much less than double.  Especially as you will not have to feel so guilty stopping for a drink after work, or not going for a long walk or play session when you're exhausted (after all, they will have each other now for company and play).  Finally, there is the mental comfort that you have not cheated your dog out of a life with his own kind.

Two is much better than one in my opinion.
