I do not read this forum on a regular basis, but do check in once or twice a week.

It always amazes me when I hear people recommend a breeder because they just
got a new puppy, especially when they say "they do not breed to make money, but for the love
of the breed". Really? I do not know ANY one who has bred a litter that at least would like to make
their expenses back. If they do it not be make money - then the puppies should be free.
I do not know a breeder that does not love the breed in one way or another. To some it is a business,
to some it is to keep some good lines going. But I have never heard someone say: "I want to breed a litter
and loose money beause I love the breed so much". I can't wait to see these same people who make
these insane comments breed a litter and NOT make any money because they LOVE the breed so much.
It is nice to reccomend breeders, but please be realistic.

its not realistic to expect breeders to show/title/be out expenses of a litter and then turn around and give the pups away for free.

I don't remember the last time I actually made a small profit on a litter. I am generally always in the "red"

Well, perhaps when they mean "make money", they mean "make profit". I'm still in the red on my venture into becoming a breeder, although I will say my hope was the sale of puppies would fund my love of sport, conformation, and other performance venues. Make money? Well sure, I sold my puppies for money. Profit? I'll get back to you when I stop laughing.

But I do know what you mean, Pat. It's very easy to love a breeder who just sold you a wonderful, puppy breath emitting, ball of fluff. Give it a few years, people, and your perspective may change.

You are so right.....love the breeder NOW...wait until things start to go wrong, bad temperament, illness, bad hips whatever then the breeder will be on the s--t list because of course they knew up front those things would happen!
You try to be rational in this sport, but it gets harder and harder to read so many stupid responses.
I have had several litters, never made any money. After shots, stud fees and knowing the people the puppies went to, and you don't want to screw them.......plus paying for all the training. I guess I qualify as a breeder that loves the breed and doesn't do it for the money.
And what is wrong with breeding a quality dog and actually making a few bucks?

as long as you do right by the dogs, there's nothing wrong with breeding them and making a little $.

In my area there are a few Breeders, that charge BIG MONEY for their pups! I would name them, BUT.. IT WOULD BE DELETED!! THe love of the breed..HUH? NOT! It is how this BREEDER makes a living! 3,500 and up for a pup! HIGHWAY ROBBERY!! I WOULD NOT recommend ANY BREEDER that makes a living off of dogs! Just a HIGH PRICE PUPPY MILL!

BEAUGSD.. I am being honest and REALISTIC!! I DO NOT RETURN DOGS if there is a problem, as there IS NO PERFECT DOG! I have a dog with EPI.. She will be 11 years old in August, is loved, and is well taken care of!

By the way... I AM NOT a breeder!
And your comment, "What is wrong with breeding a quality dog and actually making a few bucks?" EVERYTHING!! Too many BYB'S are doing this, and there is no quality, just more problems out there.

There is always someone out there that tries to turn a POSITIVE EXPERIENCE into a NEGATIVE POST!

Of course there has to enter some money to finance food and care and housing etc. of the dogs, as this is not for free either. Look at any living organism (look at nature), any organ can contribute to the body without receiving "fuel" to keep it going? This is what I thought, but actually there are some breeders who really make money cheating people  drawing down general reputation of honest breeders. There are BAD breeders who get fat with profits on account of others who don't have to keep alive their animals if it was for the money coming in for puppy sales, and this has nothing to do with the quality of the dogs, but it has to do with publicity and unsane publicity just for business purposes (and with demand-offer mechanisms). Anyway, there are criminals and borderline criminals in all areas and activities where money is involved. Sorry, a good puppy cannot be for free for another reason. Just offer something for free and people will think that this is worth nothing, poor puppy will be treated accordingly (finish in the street, in the case of Latin America). I don't want to continue, just have to serve the breakfast to my dogs and later go out to look for dog food, maybe I find it for free.

Maybe some people like dogs and the tax write offs they might receive from losing money or breaking even can give a pretty powerful incentive as well.
