Lexey10260

I have a couple of dumb questions.  I just got my sable pup on Sunday 1-4-10.  She was born on 10-22-09.  I have a couple concerns about her.
1.  She seems to breathe heavy while resting.  About 55-60 respiration per min.  Is that excessive?
2. Her stomach makes a loud gurgeling sound. You can hear it across the room.  Her stools are very soft and mushy.
She also belches and has very bad gas.

She has been eating the royal canine baby puppy dry food.  Should I change?  She also eats her food so fast. I have tried smaller portions more often, but have only had her 50 hours or so.  Can a puppy be colic?

I have taken her to the vet yesterday and they were not concerened. I am though.   I have been a cat person for 20+ years and have had both my babies die in the last 90 days.  I haven't had a sheperd since high school.

Any responses will be greately appreciated.

I am no vet and some people may have some good imput.

royalcanine is most likely causing the gas and stomach rumblings. I used to work with a rescue that liked it and many of there dogs had teh same problems with it.

however i will say i would definitely change royal canine. I do not like this food for many reasons. However one big one is it has a lot of carbs in it. dogs dont need them. plus it has aditives and other things dogs dont need in it that can cause harm and many health issues in dogs. For the money you can get much better foods which are better suited for your dog and much healthier.

I prefer either all natural life stage kibbles or raw.

some kibbles i like  innova evo, eagle pack, verus and others.

my maintenance older house dogs i feed verus. however my pups and working dogs eat either raw or innova evo!

Hi Lexey

I have a pup the same age as yours (born 23rd October) - just to reassure you a little, his respiration rate is the same as your pups.

When my puppy`s stomach rumbled he had worms.  You might want to check that also.

Vet checked and No Worms.  She eats well, but that tummy sure rumbles.  Thank you for your responses.

Lexey,

Breathing fast is normal for a pup at that age unless she is choking... Don't worry!

Remember not to give any rawhide for a young pup because it might cause some suffocation. It happened to me once.

A new environment can also cause stomach stress.  Give the pup some time and the stools should firm up.  You can add canned pumpkin to help with the stools.  I don't know anything about the food you are feeding her.  I like Canadaie although several people on here don't but I have had no trouble with it and my dog thrives on it.  Are you wetting the kibble before feeding it.  There are different schools of thought on that as well but I always wet Echo's.  If your pup is eating too fast, hand feed her to slow her down.  She could be swallowing air if she is gulping it down so fast.   Keep us posted on how she does and don't forget to post some pics!

Have your vet check the stool again...........also check for Coccidia & Giardia.
Stress , diet change..etc....can cause gastric upset in all dogs, especially puppies.
The "gastric sounds" are not normal.......the breathing is.

Yes, definitely check for Giaradia.

It is the most under-diagnosed parasite and gurgling stomach is a big symptom along with smelly soft stools.

A fecal float is not likely to find the vicious hiding critters.  An antigen test will work.  You can increase the success rate of a fecal float by taking samples of different poops over two days and then bring them in.

The breathing sounds normal.

good luck

Michele
