Hello, well i picked up my new GSD puppy yesterday and when i got there he was playing, very happy, running around etc. well as soon as he got in our car, he cried for the rest of the day and was drooling exxcesively, and threw up a couple of times. Since he was for my boyfriend, he was still at my house and he would wag his tail but cry at the same time so i was confused on whether he was happy or not ? He met my other shi-tzus and it did not go so well so i separated them ASAP. The only good thing was that as soon as he met my boyfriend (he was a birthday present) his WHOLE attitude changed, he stopped crying, was trying to play with him they pretty much bonded. Well i talked to my bf this morning and he said he slept fine, woke up peed and pooped and was trying to play with the two chihuhahas he already has. But he wont eat, he is still a bit scared at times and im wondering if the stress of coming to a new home is making him not hungry? He is not too skinny hes actually pretty chunky. My boyrfriend said he gave him milk and he loved that, but we are not sure if he should even be drinking milk.

Here are some pictures of him!

If he gives milk make it goats milk not cows milk. It isn't unusual for puppies to not eat and/or to have diarrhea for a day or two when going to their new home. Taking an 8 week old pupoy from its mom and litter mates is like taking a 6 year old child from its family. They are old enough to miss what is left behind and to be scared and confused. It can take a couple days for them to settle in.

Instead of milk, try mixing his food with a tablespoon of canned dog food. Cesar Malan has a food in very small containers so less is wasted. It has plenty of pectin that seems to help firm up the poop. It will smell good and should get him interested in eating. Once he's eating well, stop the canned food. Cow's milk can give a puppy the soft runny poop.

Keep the other dogs away from the puppy for a week or so. Having a pushy/aggressive adult dogs posturing and attacking a new puppy is not a good situation - ever. Let the puppy play and bond with your boyfriend without being harassed by the other dogs. Never let adult dogs and puppy stay together unsupervised.

Keep track of how much the puppy is eating and drinking (use a notebook if needed), if puppy becomes lethargic, or has runny poops for more then a few days a trip to the vet is in order. Take your notebook along with the puppy's vaccination and worming records.

If you take him to the vet, take him in a crate and do not let him out of the crate except for when its on the exam table - only after you see it washed down with disinfectant. Yes, I'm overly cautious...but better safe than sorry.

The salivating and throwing up could have been motion sickness from the car ride, if it happened right after, or just that he was really worked up.

I'd let the dog settle in, very quietly, and only introduce it to the other dogs once it's settled into it's new environment. Did the breeder send you home with food? I'd try to keep everything as much the same as possible.

The crying is because he's missing his littermates, most likely.

Have you taken him to the vet yet? I know most breeders have it in the contract to take the pup to the vet within 48-72 hours, to check and make sure everything is ok and they're not selling you a pup who is sick. If he's chunky, could be worms. The salivating and puking could be from the car-ride, or could be from something else. Loose stool? I'd get him checked out anyway, especially just getting him and having him around other animals, just in case it is something more than just getting used to the new house.

I agree with those above, it is quite normal for a new pup to go "off his food" and have some loose stools for a day or two. Stress from the change of environment, food, water causes that.  But I always check my new pups within 48 hrs to make sure they're not carrying any internal parasites, cause that is also common in pups, and causes loose stools.  Keep us posted!

Stress in a puppy can cause an outbreak of either/both coccidia or giardia. Many kinds of parasites including those 2 organisms can make a puppy not want to eat. So have it's stool checked with those things in mind.
It can also be very normal to be car sick - drooling, vomiting etc Usually they grow out of that.
Being off their food for a day or 2 might be normal as others have mentioned.
It is also normal for a puppy to be unsure about something new. What makes the difference is how you handle it. Never coddle them and tell them it's ok, if they are unsure or fearful. This only reinforces their fear and tells them that they are acting appropriately. Best thing to do for that is to ignore the fear or distract them happily with a toy or any kind of play.
Milk is not appropriate for a 8+ week old puppy, unless it's buttermilk or goats milk. Cottage cheese and or canned 100% pumpkin can help with loose stools.
Hope that helps some.
