I have always agreed with the form follows function line of thought.   If you breed it looks will follow.  Sometimes the AKC can get stuck on looks and forget the original form.  just food for thought not trying to start any fights so please don't take it personally.

Does anyone know what Shepherdwoman is referring to?  Personally, I think the woman has dropped her basket.

On another note:  As for the showline dogs, one thing that really bothers me is that most of the show dogs' working career (if one could even call it that) is over once they pass their SchH3 at 2 or 2.5 years old.  Most, especially the top ones, never really compete after that except for a pitiful courage test at a sieger show and all they have to do is pass to get "pronounced."  If the dog broke down (in his back for example, as mine did with spondylosis at 4 years old) who would know?  They can give the dog some pain meds before the show.  They can keep breeding the dog based on his wonderful accomplishments (?).  Even if he is unsound, a courage test as it is performed in a sieger show is not all that strenuous.  What is supposed to be a test of breed worthiness does not in any way address the true ability or temperament of a dog.

That's my story and I'm stickin' to it.

Personally I prefer the working line as I am more likely to get the workaholic temperament that I like.  That being said on a recent vacation I visited the Heidenfeld-Hirschfeld SV club.  They expect the dogs to have correct bitework and they do not baby them.  If all the dogs were painted a neutral color and you could only judge by their work you would never know that they were all showline dogs.  (excpt for the white one)  Most  showline exhibitors do not take the time to properly train the dogs.  On the otherside most working line exhibitors skip ring training and consequently do the dog no favors in the show or survey.

My 2 cents worth.
