My vote goes to Showdogs that work . You cannot get a working line that looks like a showdog!!!!

by Bob McKown on 19 March 2008 - 14:03

And why would you want to?

Don Corleone

Voting for showdogs that works is like voting for an honest politician.  They are few and far between.  I'm not saying that there aren't nice working showlines.  I personally think that the showlines are ugly.  I hate the look of a dog that has the roach back, walking on its hocks, lazy, depressed, shaggy, light colors, no courage or bravado, and can't distinguish sex because they all look too feminine.

The  Beauty of a GSD does not come by placing  it in a stacked position.  It comes from it's working ability.  There is nothing more beautiful than a well bred, well-trained GSD at work.  Whether it is farming, herding, police, PP, SAR, Sport, etc., the GSD at work is what should be marveled.  If you do not see this, there is a problem.    All this talk about short and long croups, toplines, withers,  etc., is irrelevent.  Yes, structure should not venture too far from the standard, but to get too carried away is rediculous.

Ideally I would want a showline looking dog with the agility and working properties of a working line. Question is how do you go about accomplishing that in a single lifetime ? I guess what I am saying is how great would that be if all breeders started breeding dogs towards that goal and one day we had a unified breed with no separation in lines!!

Q Man

The truth of the matter is that there will never be "ONE" German Shepherd again...I mean like the Golden Middle or something...But what would be nice is to see a Working Line GSD that has nice conformation....and a Show Line GSD that has good working ability...But since there are at least two different ideas going on it will be very hard to accomplish...There is and has been some effort in trying to breed Working Line Dogs to Show Line Dogs...and this doesn't really accomplish much on a large scale...It does help down the line somewhat...

I agree with Don Coreleone and even with Q Man specially with the showdogs my believe is they really overdone it with them, who wants a lame dog, these judges look at crippled dogs and place the worst one who can't walk or run on he's /her feet, they are totally down on theire hocks, dogs like that should be disqualified in my opinon, I reasontly seen a litter of 9 week old showpups very very sad.

so if we the dogs work is schutzhund a can some one define work?  for me work would be a dog that is strong drive, nerve and temperment.  a dog that walks thru the paces is not working.  so i think show people and working dog people have different views of what work is....

I wouldn't vote for either.

I better be careful what I say,  Now that the internet police are on duty.

Both disiplines  have narrowed thier particular gene pool and the real GSD is lost in a back yard as far as I'm concerned.

Its either a bite or a gate.   Its discusting to hear improving the breed.   Protecting the breed.

I've read this arguement too many times, and I always disagree.   A GSD is so much more, and the only way to see it is one at a time, over a life time.     How well does it serve its master, I dont mean will it follow comands.

Go ahead and vote,  This will only bore me. But its what you live for.  You got the board you wanted.

Discusted,

SSDD

Someone made an interesting comment the other day on here that there are probably some really good working show dogs out there, but often they just get the minimum training to get the Sch title and then stop.  They wondered what if we took some of these beautiful show dogs and gave them as much training as the working lines get, then perhaps we'd see that there ARE some really top-notch working show dogs out there.

I thought this was good food for thought and hope I get to try it one day.

Hey Two moons, lighten up will you?

having a chat about the breed for ANY subject that might be , is only food for thought and people feel good talking about the breed. why you should be discusted, i dont know , all issues discussed revolving around our dogs only make us wiser and more knowlegible. If your view is that the breed is going from bad to worse what do you have to suggest to improve it?
