I just came across this ad. A very cute puppy but the colour and coat looks different from anything I've ever seen.

Normal color. A sable pup with "smut" on toes, and who will probably be dark sable once he blows the rest of his puppy coat--which is all faded out in color and fuzzy-- and the adult coat comes in. Veronica

I've never known any sable puppies other than when they were just whelped. So the light coloured fuzz is the puppy coat of a dark sable. Thanks!

he is my first sable dog.

I had no idea! There are things in life you can read about and hear discussed but they just don't sink in until you actually see them.
Thanks for the pictorial :)

Thank you for sharing the pics with us and that helps explain how a sable turns out

Aqua,
The sable puppies, little grey or brown "puff balls" tend to have a black stripe down the middle of the back and a black ring around the tail near the "root." The black seems to spread down from those sites. By the time that they are 2 or 3, the sables look nothing like the puppies that were brought home.
I had a B & T bitch puppy pull the same stunt on me. She started out looking like a nice near bi-color. About 8 months old, the red strted spreading and by the time she was 16 months, she was a beautiful black and red saddle-marked bitch. She looked nothing like her puppy photos, either.

Sables really are a surprise package. They change, lighter then darker, then back again many times throughout their whole lives although the changes get more subtle as they get older.
