Anyone know?

Why can't I find many GSDs doing Ringsport (via a google search)?

I am just curious!!

Why are there not more GSDs doing ringsport? Is it because ScH training is more readily available than French Ringsport or because they simply can't do it?

If they can't do it....why? Mental? Physical?

Hi Sara,

I'm training a GSD in both Schutzhund and Mondio Ring. Hope to get titled in both by the end of the year.
It's not that ring is too hard for a GSD (or Dobermann). It just takes more effort and is more of a challenge.
Doing Schutzhund with a GSD or Ring with a Malinois is too easy ;-)

Schutzhund is a requirement for breeding the GSD.   Therefore the working dogs must be titled.  Breeders were required  to test their stock and more dogs are titled)   I could be wrong but I believe french ring is a sport.  In France it was a breed test but not an actual requirement.  Feel free to correct me if I am wrong.  I know zip about the sport :)  Sure is neat to watch though!!!!!

HI Sara

Mondio Ring is World Ring. It's a little bit of French Ring, a little NVBK (Belgian Ring), a little KNPV and a little Schutzhund. Less decoy pressure then French Ring, but more environmental pressure like NVBK. The main difference in Mondio is every trial is different and has a theme. The Wild West, The Wizard of Oz, Home on the Farm and the props etc reflect the theme. Check out some video on the website on search Mondio Ring on You tube
Here's the United States Mondio Ring Association (USMRA) web site

Thank you, Thomas!  I will check the link!!  I had never even heard of Mondio until I saw your post!

I checked youtube videos of French ring and saw all Mals. They look really athletic, sound, and smart.  A part of me wondered if a lot of the modern GSDs could not do it as it looks quite taxing. A lot of the GSDs I see on here look so heavy that I can't picture them doing the wall thing or the long jump thing!!  I don't know if they would hold up over time....

As a side note, I have a GSD. She's a WL though and has not been bred for the show ring at all.  Thus, she is small, agile, and athletic like the mals.  But, I am sure there are some GSDs out there that might be able to do it.  Funny observation...... some of the WL GSDs kind of, in a weird way, look closer to the mals than to the German Shepherd Showline dogs.  They seem leaner and squarer and more "cat-like".

I remember reading something about the German government switching from GSDs to Mals. Now, I can see why!!

But, my theory is purely speculation not knowing absolutely anything about the sport or if Mals really are as healthy and athletic as they seem to be on videos.

I know my herding instructor switched from GSDs to Belgian Tervs for health reasons. The GSDs she had just didn't hold up over time and had health issues. I met her Tervs and her older ones are like 12 and 14 years old and still working sheep in advanced class competitions!

I am guessing that you have a Doberman (I know such a rocket scientist I am)!  That must be REALLY interesting as I haven't seen too many of those in ScH ads.  I guess you like a challenge, huh!! Good luck to you!!!

Thanks again,
Sara

people hear too much shit and don't do enough stuff to know.  Get out and do it, then you'll know.
