hey charlie - i feel for you! must ask, what causes you to go against your gut and let the goofy/problematic buyers take a pup home? i have done the same thing and am trying to diagnose self with your input.... i let a pup go home with a real PITA who i almost threw out of my home... i thought his wife was wonderful, and she tempered my judgement about a guy who phrased every question as an accusation. he especially seemed to need a pup, emotional devastation from a recently deceased loved pet. i do believe the pup got a good home, but i got a headache.

I will only put a deposit on a pup that I know I want. I don't even care if I have to wait a year to get it. I want to hold my picking order for that breeding. But then i am not just buying a pet either. So i don't mind putting down and deposit, and have found that people really like knowing that they get a pick from that litter/breeding. It has worked well for me....

The only two times i accepted payments both times were awful!!! first the lady lived half mile down same road as me had previous rottweiler in excellent health all of it's life he was fourteen I had been to thier home to see the dog and meet the family. They came almost daily to visit pup were paid halfway through I felt big hearted let them take pup home to pay the rest after all they lived right down street I drove down almost daily right? WRONG!!! They were gone quicker than you can blink left a car in yard and curtains like they were home!! The landlord offered me a reward if I found them as they owed him big time too. I had all thier info and still couldnt find them I was interested in repo the puppy instead of payments. now years later I can smile even though never saw them again because if nothing else at least I know the pup if nothing else is very well loved and cared for as what they had with the other dog could not have been a lie. second was same litter I had not turned thier pup over to them until paid in full just took forever. I always had a waiting list for the litter for two years before was bred as I only maintained my lines with the breedings and was not selling for profit. I have been contacted by owners to this day pups are getting old dog age and they are sad I have no more for them and that does my heart good that the owners have had long time relationships and good health together! I never accepted deposits and never had pups leftover the two incidents above were the only gone wrong ones. Now however if I was a breeder that had several litters a year I would take deposits as I definetly see the need for them but if the pup could not live up to the quality I would expect to be sold to myself of course I would refund the monies Im sure if that breeder had bought that puppy she would have been screaming refund imedietly!

kioanes, My only guess and I say this only in fun, you, like myself are an ass...lol.Hey in both our cases the dogs got good homes.I guess I rather give a dog away to someone that is going to take care of it rather then get top buck for one then have it end up in a hellhole......

GSDNewbie: That is another reason I don't take deposits. Everybody that gives you a deposit and you accept, gets to tell you how to run your kennel, come by and visit the pups everyday(never mind it is your Dams pregnancy/pup rearing). They buy the book, "The monks of New Skete" and have to come by periodically(3-4 times) to perform their personal temperament test. ENOUGH ALREADY(smile). You don't give me money(deposit) and I run my own kennel and I don't put up with your BS everyday(smile).
