new puppy german shepard mixed with what? - Page 1

I recently got Scout from the shelter, they think he's around 2 months old. He has a short coat and a short tail, but his face and coloring looks like a German Shepard. He seems kind of small so I'm not sure what he's mixed with. His ears don't stand up but are floppy. He is very brave and will wrestle and take toys from my 2 full grow labs. We love him very much and were just worndering if anyone out there could help identify what he's mixed with. Thanks.

BTW, the name of the breed is the German SHEPHERD. It's a HERDING dog, so remember to include the word 'herd' in the name.

I love when shelters will tell people the majority of dogs are GSD mixes because of the coloring or errect ears.

The shelter near me will tell you a beagle is a shepherd/lab mix. hah.

There are many breeds with black/tan markings and black saddles and errect ears.

I have to agree with vomtreuenhaus,  there is I believe, too much a propensity to mis-identify dogs as being German shepherds. I have seen dogs at the vets' office whose owners identified them as German shepherds but to me I could see no German Shepherd Dog, only hound! I once knew someone who adopted a dog from a rescue and was told by the rescue that it was 100%  German shepherd. The rescue had seen both parents in making this determination. The adopter asked my opinion and I told him it was not 100% but looked as if it had sharpei in it. The adopter had a DNA test done on the dog and it had 5 different breeds in it's make-up one of which was sharpei. I wonder if breed mis-identification has made German Shepherd Dog bite records artificially high?  BTW the name of the breed here in the United States is the German Shepherd Dog, but may go by  a different name in Canada. A german shepherd is someone we English speakers would use to describe a person that does herding not the dog.  Thank-you floidagsddog for saving a dog's life and welcome to the forum!

I had a customer come into my work with a Long coat sable GSD. That the shelter told them was a Shepherd/Bernese Mountain dog mix. Really? There was nothing Bernese about this dog, it was 100% shepherd but the guy insisted, so I chuckled to myself...its funny that shelters will clearly see a purebred shepherd, but say it is mixed with something "soft and sweet" to move it. When the unsuspecting new owner gets it thinking its a mix of such and such, expecting such and such..and end up with a full blown drivey shepherd.

And visa versa.
