My female has been losing her winter coat for the past week.
Seems to get earlier every year or does it depend on the severity of the winter?

Mine too, last year was the same, although then she was coming in to heat.
Our weather is just screwed up this year, I don't know if that has anything to do with it or not.
Yesterday it was -10C, today it is +9 with rain. Tomorrow it is back to -5.

She is not due in season for another 2 or 3 months so I can rule that out.
Suppose if spring plants can be fooled into blooming early by the mild winter it would be possible for a dog's coat to start shedding early?

Mine had one for a month tops. I live in Alabama, it's 73 today. I don't blame her for shedding it, it's hot!

My dog started shedding about a month ago... hair, hair, everywhere! But I don't blame her, the weather here has been really screw-y too... plus we are outside all night in the nasty cold (she goes to work with me), then inside most of the day, where they keep it waaaay too hot for even my liking.

Losingthe winter coat has nothing to do with temerature, it has to do with the amount of daylight hours, Once you go towards spring there is an increase in daylight, the dog will naturally start losing its coat. There was a study done in Europe where the animals was subjected to artificial day light.
The reseachers had the dogs shed coat a few times per years, this was also done with snow shoe hares, were they went from the white winter coat to the brown summer coat just by artificially change the amount of day light.
