Hello Jantie, I'm sorry to read about your misfortune. I know first hand the heart break you are experiencing. As I'm sure you know, buying a puppy is a crap shoot. It does not matter who's kennel the pup comes from. Many German breeders (including the high profile ones) sell their pups at lower prices than you would pay in the U.S. They do so because they know pups are a crap shoot. They also do so because they feel that you know up-front that they are not guaranteeing anything and the price reflects this. This is by no means an endorsement of this practice, however it is reality. All serious breeders will hold on to the pick pups. Often you are lucky to get what would be considered the second or third pick. Most puppy buyers who have done their homework would like to buy from a successful, Name Kennel, from TOP bloodlines. This does not guarantee anything. Only a written contract gives you a fighting chance, and they are only as good as the paper they are written on. Another point of view would be what if the dog turned out to be a TOP placing VA dog, would you send more money to the Kennel? I would suggest that you appeal privately to this kennel and try very hard to reach an amiable solution. I’m sure the breeder knows of the other problems with hips in the litter. You should try to find out hip information on the other siblings, it may go even deeper than you are aware of. I believe that pointing this out to the breeder in a nice way is the smart move. It is great that you inform everyone of your misfortune, but on the other hand a private negotiation with the breeder would be better. I don't think that I know of any breeder that would like to see their dirty laundry aired out for thousands to see, regardless of their status in the GSD community. I really hope all works out for you, and my only suggestion is that if want to decrease the chances for problems in the future, you should look at the purchase of an older, proven dog, it’s the safest way.
