Hi, I had a 3months old GSD I got it from a friend a week ago..He's so playful and intelligent..I kinda worry about his ears coz until now they're still not standing and floppy. one is set forward and the other is backwards...Is this normal? Need help from you experts of this wonderful breed..Your comments and suggestions are highly appreciated.

Hi Campbull,
Most puppies will have floppy ears at that age, they will probably go up and down whilst the puppy is teething anything up to six months or more, give the puppy some bones or pigs ears to chew this will help and will also strengthen the puppies jaw and help to bring the ears up.

This is very normal of GSD pups and all pups honestly. They are born with their ears down, they do a bunch of tricks similar to what you'd see a gymnist doing, then usually they stand for a while and when puppy starts to teeth they can start doing tricks or completely drop again. A small amount of vitamin C and E during this time can help with that but please speak with your vet before any supplementing. You aren't alone! A friend's Pharaoh Hound puppy did not get his ears until he was EIGHT months old. They were worried! Though he got a reserve once and the photo is quite funny (in retrospect!).

Good luck with your pup!

Yeah I thought so too...some of his siblings have erect ears that's why I got worried that it might turn out to be a deformity...But nontheless, we'll still accept him for what he is..
A friend also told me that  GSD pups who have late erection of ears are heavy boned..I don't know what's the rationale but is there any truth to that?

shtal, myfanwy, gwalt_  Tnx guys for sharing your views, insights and helpful tips...

get him also exposed to lot of new environments with sounds. He will try to straighten his ears up when he hears something new

Take pictures.  I think you'll get a good laugh at the ever-changing ears when you look back on the photos.

Hello Campbull,

My Sky didn't have his ears erect untill three weeks ago. he's is now18 weekks old.
First his ears were floppy, but they would errect when something gets his attention. Then one would lean inwards while the other still was floppy (it was hilarious; as if he was poitning to the right hand direction whith his ears :D).
Then both started to errect slightly but would lean towards each other when his resting. And that's the case till now.
But they getting firmer.
He chews a lot of bones and actually I feed him a bowl of soup (checken or meat soup) with every meal. He eats three times a day.
I know they get firmer by time. Be patient!

Ok, let me be the Debbie Downer here.  GSD's with floppy ears at or beyond 3 months often have recessive traits.  A pure breed GSD with dominant traits will have erect ears as early as 8 weeks.  Floppy ears on a GSD at this age is like buying a Mustang or Camaro with a V6.  Yea, you got a name brand car it just has no muscle.
