Best wishes for your Noah. I can only imagine the fear and anxiety. Please keep us posted.

Our gsd boy had the exact same symptoms that you have described. We thought at first it might be poisoning but found nothing in the yard or on property. We also have a gsd female who was exposed to everything as male and wasn't  sick. My boy started to vomit and stopped eating. He would drink water and I gave him shots of penicillin for 3 days, along with chicken broth. On the fourth day he was very weak and still vomiting so we took him to the vet. They immediately gave huge dose of penicillin and electrolites iv. Blood work showed elevated pancreatic enzymes, but we were told not to worry, most dogs recover in about 2 days from pancreatic attack. My baby didn't. We lost him after two days of iv therapy. I lost my best friend and I still wonder what caused this to happen. I hope you have much better luck.

Judy Huston from the White Shepherd Genetics Project (www.wsgenetics.org) emailed me stating " We know that the GSD/WS has:

Dilated Cardiomyopathy
Inherited Ventricular Tachycardia
Mitral Valve Defect
Patent Ductas Arterosius
Persistent Right Aortic Arch
Pulmonic Stenosis
Subaortic Stenosis
Tetralogy of Fallot
Tricuspid Valve Dysplasia and
Ventricular Septal Defect

My White Shepherd died at 15 months of Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy which is very rare genetic disease in dogs (but common in cats).  It is the thickening of the inner walls of the heart, especially on left side, so that eventually there is no room to pump blood out of the heart to the body.  I wonder if many of these ailments also affect colored GSDs. While researching HCM many said that symptoms include lethargy and not eating/drinking. Our dog did not show any symptoms but suddenly died after 2 loud howls.

Our pathologist who performed the necropsy said that an ecocardiogram would not have detected it as no unusual sounds would have been detected. Maybe an x-ray or ultrasound may have?

Good luck with your pup. We wish you the best.

Hi,
I had this happening once, I took him to my Vet and told him about the same symptoms and also noticed he was especially tender in the abdominal area and requested a exploratory emergency surgery. The stomach area was opened and my Vet pulled out the intestines, he came up on a place where the intestines was "sucked up" like when you take off your rubber gloves. I don't know how to better explain it, there is a name for it, I forgot.
My Vet told me that this happens in humans also, but usually children and not adults, he would have never expected to see this on a 5 year old dog.
The surgery was successful but my dog unfortunately did not bounce back .
I never heard of this before and mentioned it on the AOL GSD board and had 2 breeders or pet Owners to come forward who's dogs did not survive, like mine.

Any news? I pray the dog is ok..

My 8 year old intact male is exhibiting similar symptoms... and we are taking him to the vet first thing in the morning.

2 days ago, he started nibbling at his food, would take a bite, then go outside (we have a dog door), take another bite... and then leave it. If I left the food down, he would hover near and take a bite only when I came in the kitchen. He was very low-key and not his usual self.

The next day, he ate better and seemed better... so I thought he must have not been feeling well yesterday.

Today he is lethargic, only ate some of his food, keeps lying down, staring at me.. and then lays his head on his paws. Usually he is outside guarding his stick from the other dogs... or constantly pestering me with a toy.

His lower abdomen seems tender but not swollen, as he does a low growl yelp when you feel it. His nose is cool and wet, but his gums seem pale. His breathing seems fine. I have felt all over and he does not seem bothered by being touched anywhere but his lower abdomen. He is just not himself and I am growing more and more concerned.

All of our other dogs are fine and showing no signs of this.

I will keep you posted on what the vet has to say.... I just hope the starter of this post was able to find out what was wrong.

GSDtravels

My granddaughter had the same symptoms at the age of three and it took months (and almost her death) to finally diagnose a cholydochal cyst.  During many emergency room visits and misdiagnoses over a period of three months, I kept saying that her symptoms were the same as in adults with diseased gallbladder.  I was ignored as just an uninformed layperson.  When she was in major organ failure, the cyst was found with a simple ultrasound.  It was blocking the bile duct, just as a gallstone would.  The surgeon stated at the time that had they listened to me, she would have been properly diagnosed on her first visit!  They rebuilt her entire biliary tree and removed her gallbladder during and extensive surgery.  She is now 13 and in good health.  I'm not sure if this condition can exist in dogs, but it's worth checking into!

Were you not the one that had to send a sick pup back to a breeder?  If so, I'm doubly sorry for the problems you're experiencing now.  It's a terrible thing to have a sick dog at such a tender age.  I'm hoping the problem is found quickly and your baby is back on the road to good health.  We are all kindred spirits when it comes to our dogs.  Best wishes.

I wouldn't wait until tomorrow morning to take this dog in to the vet's--tender abdomen plus pale gums makes me very concerned about the condition of the spleen, and he needs to have bloodwork run ASAP, along with some abdominal films.  If the spleen is in trouble and ruptures (or already is bleeding, given the pale gums), he's not likely to make it to tomorrow morning.

Have you at least taken his temperature, and confirmed it to be normal?  If not, it would be wise to do so, and if it's above 102 degree F, he absolutely needs to be seen *tonight*.

I just looked at the date of the original post, it was last August   I didn't realize the thread had been bumped due to another poster with the same symptoms in their dog.  PositiveK9, I hope all is well, sending the same hopeful wishes.  Please keep us posted (unlike the OP).

Thanks... I wish they had done some type of update, too. Maybe it ended badly and it was too painful to come back and post. If that is what happened, my heart goes out to them.

My husband just left with Max for the vet.

There is definetly something wrong with him. When we pick up the leash, he always runs and leaps at the front door, jumping several feet into the air. This morning he trotted to the door, you could tell he was excited, but no leap. It's like something is causing pain or is making him uncomfortable, and he's smart enough to take it easy. (And this dog is high drive, no holds barred, can leap over a 6 foot privacy fence... it's breaking my heart.)

There is no vomiting and he seems to pee normally. His nose was a little warm last night. And he'll eat treats, almost took my hand off this morning, so he's hungry...  doesn't want to eat his food (Evanger's Fish & Sweet Potato) unless I put it in my hand. At first I suspected the food, but I have 2 others dogs on it and they have no symptoms. The others eat Evanger's Pheasant & Rice and are all fine. The lethargy is there, and his lower abdomen is bothering him, although it doesn't seem swollen.

Makes it so hard when the symptoms are vague like this!!

I will post back what the vet says.. I'm thinking possible liver or pancreatis? Or possible blockage?
