Hi all
I've had shepherds almost my whole life, they've all been family pets.  I  thought I knew my dog colors pretty well but i'm confused, I've seen some people advertising dogs as sables that i thought were regular black/tan?
there is this ad on the database
http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd/classifieds/85839.html
Is this a sable?

and also, there was a breeder who had newborn 7 puppies for sale on hoobly and I was going to contact them about buying one but later I looked at their site and they said none of the puppies would be available.  While I was on their site I saw another pup that I thought was a black/tan but they said it's a sable.   It is kinda funky looking to be a black/tan but I've always thought sable puppies were brown with a dark stripe down their backs?  Is it a sable?   How do you tell?
I copied where it says the puppy is a sable and the pic of the pup "Lailana" and underlined where it says she's sable and put an arrow to her pic so you can see which one it is.  Also what does it mean "Timo Free"?
Thanks! Jez

I do not think that is a sable color!  Would like to hear from the more exp. breeders on here to know there thoughts on this. i think it is a blue or black/tan maybe black/red. My bad on the showline sable thing. i just think of sables being a working line dog. and from looking over this web site that is posted in this thred there are NO sable dogs in there breeding program or on there site at all.

there are sable show lines, especially through Timo's lines - BUT the dogs in all of the pictures shown are not sable - they are black/tan.

ah, hold on - I just saw the arrow and question mark on the one picture - that pup may be a sable - really impossible to tell from the front - there are "patterned sables" that have markings similar to black/tans - but they are sable - this could be that - would need to see a side-shot showing the body to tell for sure.

ya molly but the ad says "NO Timo's lines" so now what? i thought that BOTH sire and dam would have to carry the sable color for there to be a sable pup? or am i worng? kathy

cat1111,
where do you get that idea that there are no showline sables? I have owned a lot of them over the years and breed them too. All, of course under SV breeding requirements (titled and breed surveyed).
Here are my current homebred sables who I have:
www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd/pedigree/537160.html - Penny is even a double sable, both parents have the sable coat color. She is in Germany right now.
www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd/pedigree/414868.html - Gina was shown at the 2006 German Sieger Show and was the best sable that year.
For more information on sables in showlines, please visit the Arlett website and just pick English and read up on sable or gray (as the Germans call them): www.arlett.de
Now, as to the advertisement: I can't see where the sable color is coming from, but maybe the breeder can give you some clarification. Remember that at least one parents has to be a sable.

kamgsd,
There are other sables in Germany as well, without the Timo-line. If you click onto my Penny's pedigree and follow her sire's dam line, you will see the Arlett sables in there. Margit van Dorssen based her sables on two old Wienerau dogs - Era and Carlo von der Wienerau!
Admittedly, the sable showlines are now reduced to two lines in Germany - Timo (or better his sire Wanko vom Lippischen Norden) and the Arlett-dogs. And Timo's sable color is actually from that small component of workinglines in him. But luckily, it only takes one sable parent to produce sable offspring.  And one thing is for sure: No two black or black andred/tan parents will every have sable puppies. That is why I am a bit confused where these sable puppies in the advertisement are coming from. Some people confuse light colored black and tan with sable!

Chris, here is the link to the pup in question's pedigree

http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd/pedigree/615028.html

i see NO sable's in there at all!

none of the dogs in the puppy's pedigree are sable.  someone mentioned blue, could this be a blue/tan?
the breeder says they've been doing this for more than 11 yrs, wouldn't they know?

oh also, is there something wrong with Timo?  why do they emphasize that she has no "Timo" like it's good?
