You make some good points. I think some of this sport vs. work has to do with some top sport trainers who will only train a certain type of dog that meets their traing approach and philosophy. A few of these people have their own breeding programs with the goal of breeding dogs with the traits that match their training approach and increases the likelihood of reaching the podium.

where else but PDB could people who have made their life LE/Mil dogs go and get advice on LE/Mil dogs from people who didn't.

but do they accept opinion from people working LE dogs for a living ??

Why should a "sports dog" be able to work as a "street dog" without "any further training"?
I never saw a real "street dog" not trained for it's job ...

For sure it's a "result of genetics" when a "sports dog" is able to perform as a "street dog" AFTER being accordingly trained.
And the handler will know during IPO training if this dog will be suitable for "street work" or not...

I never met any IPO handler who believed his dog is able to work as a "street dog" without training, to the same time I never met a police officer who believed his police dog would be able to pass an IPO trial without training...

The "good ones" are able to perform for fun AND for real when trained.

everyone has own perspectives and beliefs, based on what they are used to in dogs. these can't be changed from a talk.
i guess there should be practical experience with different types of dogs, to prefer and settle down for particular one.

susie, I think it would be fair to say that most LE dogs are capable of doing IPO program, but most IPO titled dogs are NOT capable of doing LE work, no matter the training

What about all the LE dogs that wouldn't pass any temperament test? 😎

No, kidding, you are right, but that's okay.

The GSD was never ment to be an "LE" dog, but an active, universal working and companion dog.

But I am not sure that you realize my post was in response to what duke1965 said which was: "..........we had a discussion about this recently with some top sport guys, and most of them( one was second at one of last WUSV ) all where under the impression that you can take any dog from WUSV, and take it to the street"

My post, was just basically calling BS on such notion.
