So since this is a thread dealing with prices, how much do you pay for dog which pases your test?

Hans,
$6,500 to $7,000 is the current going rate here for a green dog.  As I said I do not barter, bargain or negotiate over price.  Just the quality of the dog in that price range.  These dogs are anywhere form 11 months to 3 years old.  They are also guaranteed to work or will be replaced.

Since, I am not paying for the dog myself I don't beat the vendor up over price.  We can go a little higher for a really good dog if we need too.

If these green dogs that pass these test and meet you're criteria are worth $6500. What would the value
of these dogs be after being finished and what would the time span be to finish one?

Desert dog,
It typically takes anywhere from 4 to 6 months to train a green dog and certify with the dog.  Depending on the experience of the handler and the ability of the dog and handler.  Cross training for detection work takes another 3 to 4 months.  Hard to say what a Certified cross trained dog with out any issues would be worth?  I guess what a PD would pay would set the price.  I can tell you by the time the patrol training is done we have another 10 to 15K invested in the dog.

Thank you for your reply. I think it was accurate and honest evaluation. So lets say some where in the
neighborhood of $20,000. Having a sister that is a officer in California, and brother in law that is a swat T.O.
They have told me just last month their budgets have been cut so bad that 20% of the force there has been
cut. With budgets being cut in law enforcement one thing they are doing is adding two more K9 units to
compensate for the shortage in man power. There costs are in the 20 to 25 thousand dollar range. A few
years ago they were only budgeting 10 to 12 thousand. This was for purchase and certifying. In our economy here in the northwest budgets are being cut also in law enforcement, but I am sure it is no different than a lot of places these days. Saying all of this brings me to my point I guess. While the pool
for good quality dogs seem to be getting smaller I really am not sure that it is. I live in the county where
we call the sheriffs dept. when needed. The number of deputys are few for the area they cover. By the
time you call them usually the situation is already over. Thus the market for property protection, security
and personal protection dogs are thriving. Most of the people I know have less problems paying for a good
quality security and protection dog that is there 24-7 on their property, than most police departments. This
is not a slam against our law enforcement, but simply economics and common sense. It's the world we
live in. The type dogs needed to accomplish this are dogs that have been bred with a strong emphasis on
personal and property protection and most importantly be clear headed enough to work on their own. That
to me is the most important criteria. At 3:00 am most people are not awake to send a dog on a intruder
that may have bad intentions for your wife, children or property. To that end, Those dogs are priceless !
After reading Slamdunc's article and as I thought about it most of the night I have decided when available
to make available at no charge k9 prospects to law enforcement departments only, The only stipulation
if you don't like the dog bring him back home. I appreciate your article    Hank

Agreed Slamdunc,  your input is great because its factually insightful.

Keep posting man, its nice for me anyways, to know I'm reading info from a fair credible source.  Alot of the stuff you get on forums, you just don't know what to believe or take with a grain of salt.

That is a good and fair  price for a "green" quality dog.

I imported a 3 year old female "Lara Tur-Lad"  from Eurosport K9  that I think would qualify as a  "green" dog about 2 months ago .  She is out of Czech lines  and has had some basic training. Lara has an outstanding temperament really clear in her head, great with other dogs and kids and as a sport dog has grips to die for.

I'm working on getting her Sch1 title with Steve House who is a Certified WDA National Level Helper. Steve is impressed enough with her bite work that he's expressed an interest in getting a puppy out of her.

I paid $4,000 for her plus shipping.

You can see her pedigree and a few videos from their sold dog page  www.eurosportk9.com/forsale/l/lara/lara.asp#
