I'm not a professional, just someone who is trying to do the best I can for my dog. I enjoy reading posts on here, it's sometimes shows other views on a subject.
Now, I was lucky enough to find THE dog I'd been looking for. The previous owner was feeding him Purina Extra and feeding it to him dry. She gave me a 40# bag almost full. Of course I immediately wanted to put him on a grain free dry and also continue on some raw.  He decided upon coming to my house that he was no longer going to eat the Purina, whether it was dry or mixed with a canned food.  I know I was wrong with adding canned food because then he didn't want dry. I can't blame him, I wouldn't want dry either, lol. He will not eat raw chicked. I am going to try him on ground beef today but I can not afford to feed him all raw as much as I wish I could. I'd like to give him for example a pound of ground beef ( or something other ) and then leave  the dry out for him to eat between meals. I got him Diamond lamb and rice dry yesterday. He acts like he likes it a little but he never goes and eats it. I fed him some out of my hand to let him see what it tasted like. Please tell me what I'm doing wrong. I am going to feed him an egg 3-4 times a week and also raw beef bones on occasion. I carried him to my vet and got checked for heartworms. He was neg. and then put him on heart preventitive. He was given the 7-1, wormed and vaccinated for rabies. Not all at once now. He is 14 months old and he looks a little thin. You can't feel his ribs or backbone but he looks so long and he looks thin. My vet says it's because he's so young and growing so fast. I got some smart if not rude remarks about another post, if you don't want to take time to help me, just run along. Like I said I'm not a breeder or a professional, just someone who loves her dog and want to be worth of him. Thanks,  Peggy

But what I need to know is :   is this all you feed him every day? Once or twice a day? Do you add anything to this , do you feed it dry?

Texaspeg,  your vet is right.  Your dog is still growing and may not completely fill out until he is between 2 and 3 yrs old.  I feed dry--Nature's Domain (grain free) but used to feed Diamond Naturals chicken and rice or lamb and rice. I really liked Diamond Naturals, but  my 2 yr old male began having problems with dry, itchy skin and my vet recommended grain free.  The Nature's Domain that I feed my dogs is made by Diamond and is sold at Costco.  So far, so good (my dogs have been on their grain free food for 2 months now and my male's skin is greatly improved).  He weighs 70 lb and is 26 in tall so he's not big.  My 3 yr old female weighs 65 lb and my 11 month old female weighs 68 lb.

Thank you for your answers. I give him a raw beef bone and he acted as if he had never seen one before. How do I get him to eat it? Also, do you give your dog raw chicken leg and thigh bone in? He doesn't like raw chicken either. He likes it cooked but a lot of you say raw is better. He likes raw beef as in steak. Gonna try him on hamburger tonight. The previous owner that had him since 8 wks., said she fed him raw a lot. Funny how he acts like he doesn't recognize raw chicken, beef bone, etc. Do you leave kibble out for him to eat on or just at meal time?  I haven't had a GSD for about 35-40 years, then you just fed dry food and raw wasn't even mentioned. I am in a forign land here.  Thanks for your help. Peggy

I feed each my dogs 4 cups of dry food a day.  Usually, they will eat most of it in the evening and then eat the rest of it in the morning when they get up.  Some of the other members on this forum feed strictly raw and can give you more information on how to feed a balanced raw diet.  I only supplement with raw, usually chicken or beef (roast without bones).  However, I have fed chicken with bones.

Not sure how long you have had your dog, but he if he is new, that will also affect his feeding habits because he is adjusting to a new home and family.  That takes a little time.  His appetite will return once he is adjusted.

No Sir,  he eats fine if it's something he wants but that something is not dry food. He's been with me about a week and acts as if he's been here forever. He is very happy but he wants people food I think. I have given him table scraps a couple of times because I don't have table scraps very often. I had 2 pkgs. of filet steaks with bacon around them but we didn't care for them so I thawed 1 pkg. of 2 steaks and give them to him and he just didn't eat them. So I braised them in a skillet and give them to him with some beef broth and some kibble and so far he has not eaten it. I am to the point to just putting out dry food and forget it. He begs when we eat, thats one reason I think he was given table food more than dry. I don't know.
I want to do what you do, supplement with raw and feed dry. Thanks

Hi texaspeg, glad to see you.  Actually when I posted I hadn't even seen your post so that is why I didn't answer your question!

Yes, that is all I feed them.  They love it so I have no problem enticing them.  In this hot weather they are not eating as much and usually just eat at night.
I feed approx. 4 cups a day, but had to cut back as  the female was getting too fat.

I do feed raw seperately  once and a while such as a raw meaty bone, egg, cottage cheese or yogurt.  I don't cater to fussy eaters as I find if they are hungry they will eat, however, they love this dog food so that hasn't even been an issue.

You'll have to show us your new dog!  Congrats!

I feed raw (for more than 12 years).  Turkeys, chickens, pork neck, lamb/mutton, beef heart/offal, pork heart, lamb heart/offal, chicken hearts/gizzards/liver, a beef tripe/gullet/trachea mix, eggs from free range hens, wild salmon body oils, and at times organic plain yogurt.  I have fed duck and rabbit, but both are expensive.

I'm sorry I cannot get the pics to load. I'm not sure what I'm doing or not doing.
