Well and you got to remember that the bitch that took BOB MIGHT have been his best dog for that day;  possibly other dogs were not showing well, faults WE cannot see without going over the dog or hands on;  missing teeth, shitty attitude, not enough of this not enough of that, etc. etc.  The list goes on and on;  it is easy to sit along the sidelines and critique judges but really you need to have your hands on the dogs to really evaluate judging at its best.  So for that special Westmister day, the bitch was it in Jimmy Moses eyes.  Personally I did not care for her at all and  she was a freak to boot.  No thank you.  Bye for now  Nan

Rik

by Rik on 17 February 2013 - 23:02

Didn't watch the whole video (Westminster), way too long for one sitting. I do think he got the best male in the class.

I guess the most distrubing thing is that you can watch other breeds at shows and see dogs just act happy. In the ring or out. Bouncing around, focused on the handler/bait and in general acting as if they enjoy life.

With the shepherds, notice how many are bolting for the gate, ears down unless being doubled, lip licking and just giving the appearance of being miserable.

by Hutchins on 18 February 2013 - 01:02

Rik, I agree with the male, which I do think represents the true standard better than the female.  As for as the GSDs seeming like they are not happy and appear to be looking for the gate, I think that is because double handling is way over done with the GSDs.  Without them, I bet 80% of them would not "perform" as they do with a double handler.  we all did double handling but not to the extent it is done now.  Given the fact that the GSDs need a bigger ring to extend themselves, but are always put in these little 2X4 rings is ridiculous in my opinion. The gait is so important, how is it possible to judge a big dog in such a small ring?  There is no other breed in the herding group that extends themselves like the GSDs. You would think that after all this time, AKC would have caught onto that and made the larger ring a MUST.  Wonder why Jimmy as the Judge didn't require that.  As a judge they do have that right.  Seems odd he didn't. Oh well.  Sad Smile

Nan, you are right, there are many things to consider. However, at the level of competition, cost the things you mentioned shoud not be a factor. That should not have to be even considered.  Now as for them having good days or not on that given day, is definitely something to consider. But watch the video, that Bitch WAS not having her best day.  She did not look like she was comformable in that ring on that given day.  There were others that performed better without showing signs of not being happy.  But hey, I am not a judge and never will be one.  Seems too many favors are owed to too many people, and that may very well be why the GSD breed is heading in the direction is it. If I were a judge, trust me, I would tick off alot of people.  Devil Smile A dog has to be judge on that given day, not judges one against the other. I would judge each and every dog against the true standard. Many breeders and owners can not accept that.  JMO.

pups with wobbly legs are not show quality, IMO

by Hutchins on 18 February 2013 - 03:02

Puppies with wobbly legs dont always stay wobbly.  Many are exactly that, growing puppies that loose alot of the angulation which maybe cause the wobbly legs.

I had a puppy once that I placed because of the wobbly legs at 9mos old. When I saw him again at 2yrs old, I could have kicked myself in the rear.  He lost ALMOST all the angulation and did NOT move or stand cowhocked at all.  BIG mistake on my part. He was a Sel Ch. Ken Delaine Master Charge grandson.  I am certain Rik know MC and the rear he had and produced from time to time. However as puppies many had the wobbly legs but as adults cleaned up nicely with no signs of wobbly.  So to say a puppy is no show quality because he has wobbly legs, is kinda jumping to conclusions. I know because I did exactly that!  JMO

Xeph

The dark bitch I have that many here like I almost returned because of her rear.  She was never SUPER dirty, but as a young pup, she was wobbly and had a ton of rear.  I'd be lying if I said I wasn't absolutely shocked at how she's mellowed out in the back end, and she moves away queen as a whistle!

As for the BOB bitch, I can attest to nice temperament.  She's not my style at all, but she does belong to a friend, and I am happy for them that she had the win.  That BOB finished her GCH.

I have to say that Caitlin Ricker (the young girl) and her special Jerry Lee are nice.  Zale (Diamonds are Forever) with Christi Halliday is a nice bitch.  I would like a BIT more extension on her, but I love her type, and she is just dripping with coat.  Her sire is still alive and well (Zane, lovely lovely dog).  I also love Talka (#11 Kysarah's Ashkin For Trouble).

Hundmutter

Yep, Lineage,  he's one of our most successful Showdogs of recent years;
he's had quite a few studs, but he doesn't seem to be particularly pre-potent
IMO - some mixed results so far (but does include a few really nice offspring).

I believe he was really quite young still in the photo on his pedigree page here;
definately a dog who got better as he matured.   A Zamp son who has united
quite a lot of the UK in his favour (often hard to do !).

Trouble with the major all-breed Shows here (like Windsor) they don't gait 'em
long enough.  There may be some video about on YT etc that shows him at a
Club show somewhere and where you might see him moved for a longer time
in a bigger ring ?  Sorry don't have time to search for this myself.  See your PMs.
