I consider a SCHH title as nothing but a sign of trainability of the parent. Utterly useless to me in every other way.

A byb is a breeder who advertises puppies for sale charging X amount of dollars 'with papers' and 50 bucks less without. Their 'stud' dogs come from pet stores that came from midwest puppy mills. . . Typically these are a couple of real examples of the bybs where I live. . .

There are people who do health testing on sire and dams and title their dogs, who I still consider to be BYB. They can brag all they want but they churn out multi litters at a time and always have multi litter puppies for sale. They breed as much as commercial kennels and puppy mills. They double up on diseases like epilepsy for which their are no tests yet. They do as much to populate the dog world as the huge puppy mills. To me, health testing and titling does not exempt one from being a BYB- being a BYB is a mind set. Breed as much as you can, sell as much as you can. In another words, throw enough sh*t against the wall and maybe some will stick and make you money in the process. IMHO, titles and health checks do not a reputable breeder, make. My opinion, of course..

Anyone who breeds for something other than Health and Temperment and the Breed Standard (note the use of the word AND, not OR) is a BYB in my opinion. As are the people who only want money and could care less about the dog and what happens to it from that point on.
There is one breeder I know of who has 3 or 4 breeds (GSD's unfortunately being one of them), ALWAYS has multiple litters on the ground, actually raffles puppies off at Christmas time, has every color of GSD known to man, no health-testing, titles, nothing... and advertises that they are an 'AKC Approved Breeder' as if that makes everything OK. Nothing but a BYB (thats being generous... I'd consider them a puppy mill). Its such a shame that the AKC doesn't regulate this kind of thing.

lol AKC approved for some is a licence to be a BYB but prove at least on paper yr not.
Dawulf this comment "Anyone who breeds for something other than Health and Temperment and the Breed Standard (note the use of the word AND, not OR) is a BYB" i think is misguided, proof - the modern GSD is a collection of related sub-species with little or no resemblence to each other, with high variability in health, temperament and phenotype, to state there is any level of uniformity in the breed simply cannot be substantiated by simple observation. too many greeders hide behing AKC approvals, titles and legitimising their own interpretation of the standard by politics, corruption, marketting in the pursuit of dollars.
only solution is to call a gsd by what it does not what bits of paper you can wave in someones face - dogs can't read.

Humans with their pride, ego, selfcenterdness, and misguided will can always mess something up. Thats why they have GSD rescues, and thats why we are spending so much energy on this topic it dosen't change anything. I have to remember that education teaches some people how to fake it better.

my nutshell version is in their guarantees. anyone who breeds dogs and stands behind them 100% is doing it out of love for the breed.
if they are breeding dogs that they are willing to take back for any reason, then they are breeding based on what they want to own them-
selves. if there truly is something wrong with the dog, they will either place it in an appropriate pet home or euthanize the dog. if the
buyer wants another dog, they will replace or refund without making a big scene. JMHO and what i have done myself when i was
breeding dogs.

****i hate to say it, but there are a lot of big name kennels that are nothing but fancy puppy mills
because they refuse to stand behind their dogs. once out of sight, also out of mind. :(

Hi! I am not a GSD breeder but a dachshund breeder.
My opinion of a BYB is a person who:
I have found that sometimes BYB have managed to obtain quality dogs with champions in the background. Now, how can a decent breeder have allowed a dog to get into this kind of situation. I have also found some BYB willing to learn and better what they have and actually do right by them. I have even managed to convince some that testing is a good thing for the continuation of good breeding. I even know some show breeders that do not want to test but would rather remain blind to the faults/problems their dogs may create--that way they can say they did not know. Because they show, they are termed BYB.
A BYB that doesn't want to test for the betterment of the breed is on the verge of being a puppy miller.

My opinion of a BYB is a person who:
- conveniently has both parents
- breeds bitches almost every cycle
- does not know what the faults of each parent is
- staes they breed for the love of the breed (but it is usually for the love of the money the breed brings in)
- has no desire to test just breed and produce $$
- sells puppies way too young/starts to wean at 2-3 wks of age
