I think that if the male is an exceptional male, who has proven himself through titles and is proven through his offspring, who has excellent lineage and orthopedics, and who is health tested should be more than a male who has great lines but hasn't proven himself or one who has proven himself but has an ok pedigree. You wouldn't expect to breed someone to those who are national or international champions that you would for someone who is just a schh titled or who has good conformation titles. I think that $2000 is a little steep for most, but for the right dog I would see paying it. And if I were a stud owner, and my stud was highly titled, out of an excellent lineage, had great health and orthopedics, I'd charge more. I'd prefer not everyone be like "I have a blah blah blah offspring"; I'd rather have everyone say "Man I wish I had a blah blah blah offspring!" Instead of having every bitch breed to my male, I'd rather have a higher priced exclusive male moreso than a lower priced over-used male. JMO, but you get what you pay for.
