LOL@ GSDguy, and Keith!! Spooks you heard it from somebody that learned it from the old bird hunters.  That is how the realase is taught with the bird dogs, typically the German shorthaired pointers.  It does work but as we said problem we don't know her exp etc, so while it is a valid instruction, also good to teach a dog to stop "mouthing" you as a pup.  We don't want to tell someone to do that to a truly aggressive dog.  And she stated she already tried to 2 ball method and it didn't work.  Not everything works on every dog.

Now Keith......MollyandJack... I thought I gave great advice when I told the OP to run in circles, hitting their head while screaming and jumping up and down to stop the problem.  All the trainers are doing it these days.

I do know that young male GSD's are little fu- - -  to train until they hit about 3 years old;  if they are not growling their crying and whaling every correction you give them.  If this was my dog I would be sure to give him at least a 2 mile run before working with him with his obedience; which includes his retrieving the ball;  see a professional trainer and take it from there.  Best of luck  Nan

Spooks,
No need to go back the drawing board with my little sweet Annabelle. She is a HOT SchH 3, IPO 2 dog that is now 12 1/2 years old.  I trained and raised her form a pup and used positive training methods.  Nans GSD her retrieves are still fast, her grip is calm and it was all done motivationally.  I still think telling someone to grasp a growling dogs mouth is risky business.

Lyn and Molly, thanks!

Keith,

"also good to teach a dog to stop "mouthing" you as a pup"

Is Donnerstorm KIDDING me? You try to imprint all those inhibitions nice and early?

Actually, that is another reason I never do the "lip pinch."  It definitely teaches bite inhibition.

WOW, this sure has turned into an interesting thread!

The ONLY advise I will give is to find a GOOD reputable trainer in your area that has had EXPERIENCE in working this aggression.

GOOD LUCK

I also like the advice Jim has given here on this forum. He is a very knowledgable guy with many year of experience.
