Itsgsd, did it kill the grass? How much of the solution per square foot did you use?

SM, I bleach grass all the time, inadvertently, when cleaning out crates. Yes, it kills it but it comes right back. Also, I will sometimes pour straight bleach on the crate, then hose it off, so I'm likely putting a way stronger concentration than ltgsd is talking about.

One of the most useful links on treating coccidia: http://www.capcvet.org/capc-recommendations/coccidia

If you're using panacur/fenbendazole for coccidia, you need to treat 5 days in a row.

I strongly recommend the Toltrazuril--I treat at about 4 weeks (or shortly after first outdoor experience), and then at 8 weeks, the day the pups go home. Haven't needed to do more than that. I've heard of other breeders who will use it weekly--but that hasn't been necessary.

this summer was extra hot and dry. rain finally came as my litter was 7 weeks old and it lasted a week. by the time they were ready to go to their homes. one pup owner said his came down with runny poop so i asked each new puppy owner to take samples to the vet and i offered to pay. 3 out of 8 contracted coccidia and clear for everything else. the pup i kept was clear.

i clean kennels, and crates with bleach on Sundays, ammonia on Wednesdays, but i have not been letting it soak for the 20 minutes required to kill the stuff. with puppies, i sanitize every day and clean up messes asap. puppies are taught to poo in a box of shavings and i change this 2 or 3 times a day. food and water is kept a few inches off the floor, and food is picked up after about 15 minutes to keep it from becoming "dirty". i buy dishwasher safe puppy toys and clean them every few days or when they look dirty.

pups need to go out and explore, they need to run and play, to go over obstacles, chase each other and have some freedom. this litter want straight for a puddle of water in the driveway, they played in it and drank it. its the only place i can think of where they could have contracted it. i guess i'll have to include the sanitation area to include the driveway and grass.

just venting........very frustrated.

It is very frustrating,  my last 2 litters and maybe 3 got it;  I figured it was in our whelping box as everything else was new.  When mama dog goes out and digs, brushes up against wet grass and bushes, brings it back in on the teets;  I figured that was where it was coming from;  not that it helped though.  Had puppy squirts off and on;  threw the whelping box away (was one of the boxes you buy and put together, not totally wood, not handmade).  Figured it lived in that material from litter to litter;  as I was able to get 3 uses from the same whelping box;  probably not my most intelligent ventures;  dump the box if you cannot totally wash and sanitize thoroughly;  also stuff lives in towels, blankets, ground covers,  nasty parasites.  I would also alternate with Nolvasan/bleach/Lysol/Rocal D...All my favorites which I was not doing and wished now that I had...  Good luck  Nan

So Blackthorn, does the panacur for 5 days work?

BlackthornGSD

by BlackthornGSD on 10 December 2013 - 23:12

Panacur for 5 days should kill giardia and coccidia and worms. I used it one litter at 8 weeks, when we'd had a really wet summer and I was dealing with some giardia. (Puppies made a giant mud puddle in their yard!)

I was not aware fenbendazole did a thing for coccidia...only giardia, I thought.

I'm pretty sure that's something my vet told me. I've also found several online links that say fenbendazole does treat coccidia, but it seems it is not the first choice:

http://www.petco.com/Content/Article.aspx?id=2033
  • Fenbendazole treats Giardia, coccidia, roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, and tapeworms contracted from rabbits and rodent
http://www.ehow.co.uk/about_6361826_fenbendazole-coccidia-dogs.html

I wouldn't use Panacur if coccidia were the known problem--but if I wanted to deworm my pups and was suspicious of giardia or possibly coccidia being present--yes, sure.
