ok, gottcha.  I don't think it takes a lot of exposure to come to the conclusion that some breed surveys can contain creative writing.

If I were looking for a breeding dog or puppy, I look at it like here are dogs that meet a minimum requirement and I am responsible for my choice.

Someone else may look at it as it's the SV fault if I don't make a good choice.

I think you are 100% correct that relying only on a breed survey can lead to disappointment.

My definition of a back yard breeder is one that breeds dogs a couple times a year placing an ad in the local paper and and mybe craigslist that says "Champion blood lines" and 4 generations back there was a dog somewhere that was shown and breed them for christmas money and summer vacation money.  No idea what they are doing or trying to make a quality dog.

I can honestly say if I ever decide to breed my girl which I highly doubt I do but I would come here and as Gustav what he thought and a couple others here as far as a stud that would better my girls pups.

Is a big freaking hump in the middle of the back part of the standard now?

by joanro on 10 November 2012 - 17:11

Gsdsrule, can't blame the SV...it's the judges fault and everybody else touching the dogs. LOL.

GSDRULE, your well substantiated comments are always appreciated - you are the truely allmighty authority in wisdom and knowledge about the German Shepherd.

( Sorry folks, but I had to write this. )

IMO, a BYB is someone who breeds without any intention but to make money. They typically breed large amounts of litters a year, without proper vet care of the animals. Susie makes a really good point about BYBs. They don't take into consideration what the litter might produce, the ups and downs of producing the litter, all they focus on is the money from selling the pups so they cut costs anywhere they can. A BYB doesn't really put their hearts into what they produce. They typically do not provide any guarentees. That's always what I've thought of BYBs being.

Joanro I believe your statements are totally valid.  I believe that the SV is the starting point, not the total answer.
We all know that no system is perfect,  there will always be people who look at every system as a competition to be won at all cost.  try to minipulate every angle possible.  there will always be people who think their goat is the best shepherd on dry ground.  there will always be people who don't think genetic testing is necessary.  The breed as a whole may not improve, and it will be due to these types of people.  but If we as individuals do our part and try to play by the rules our lines can.

Or maybe I'm just Naive

by joanro on 10 November 2012 - 19:11

Mccintyre, I don't think you're naive at all....it takes personal integrity, no matter if it's showing, breeding or titling for these things to be beneficial to any breed.

One of the best statements I ever read...

by vk4gsd on 11 November 2012 - 02:11

great comments and very educational. so it seems volume of dogs produced is no critiria as some large scale guys do all the bad things attributed to some small scale byb, quality of dogs produced is not a criteria as sh!t dogscan come from both commercial and byb, refer to SV bite test for this. health testing is perhaps the only criteria but then again that can be done by some byb, intent is also useless cos some big guys churn out litter after litter to make a buck just like the guy wanting to pay for christmass presents? - the word is a misnomer? its like saying cos you met some criminal of a (insert whatever ethnic minority you have prejudice towards) is bad then the whole race must be bad.  the term should be Bad Yard Breeder not Back Yard lol.
