Quote: Prongs are unnecessary. never used one and have had some very tough dogs.
So you use electric ? Slip chain ? Boot ?
Or are they left in the backyard chained up ?

Various hilarity in this thread aside, physical correction makes sense in every way. Ever see a 6 week old bully puppy laying into a littermate, and let momma dog out to handle it? Ever see a dog in your home try to steal a bone from your "alpha" dog? Ever see the reaction of a dog driving a strange dog off their property? These dogs do not run to the kitchen, grab a milkbone, offer it to the other dog and say, "now now snookums, be a good doggie and you get a nummy cookie!" Hell no, the dog is charge is going to lay that punk out. And in my house, I'm in charge.
In spite of being labeled as unnatural and inhumane by AR whackjobs, correction is one the first things a dog learns to understand from their peers, and is just as important as motivation in dog training.
Have a tough dog and having the respect of a tough dog are two very, very different things.

Garbage treats will do more harm to a dog than a prong.

I didn't read all of the posts so someone may have already said this but although prongs look cruel, they were in a way created to feel like the dam's teeth on their neck, thus sending a psychological signal to their brain saying that they did something wrong...if you've ever had a litter, the Mommy will bite the pup around the neck as a correction, same concept, it's easier for them to understand as opposed to being choked.

Somehow people always generalize from not using prong, choke chains, and shock collars to being purely positive......

Changer, that's kinda like generalizing that all people that use collars are abusive.
