Definately show him in AKC,  I've shown myself and did well, had a ton of nice comments from bystanders......most people at the dog shows who aren't doing GSDs prefer the German dogs over the American.
Times are changing in the GSD ring, it's only just begun but I believe the American line will go the same way the British Alsatian did.   They'll always have their die-hard lovers but I think the German dog will someday reign in the AKC ring.
The majority of breeders who show American dogs are heavily influenced by what is popular in their lil worlds, very much the bandwagon group though they'd hate to be labeled as such.  Just start flooding the rings with German dogs and they will change.
Biggest problem with AKC groupies across the board is their fear of aggressive dogs, the belief that most German dogs are hard to handle and aggressive is very prevalent.   And, dare I say it....AKC people have a strong lazy streak.......They think a dog who can do an obedience routine is a working dog.   A rally title qualifies as an excellent judge of working character in their books.  Training a dog for schutzhund, or for an HGH versus their version of herding would be asking too much.  They enjoy flashy couch potatoe pets only, the GSD isn't the only breed thats suffered neglect to it's true heritage.

ok, off my soap box, lol.  Go show your boy!  BTW...is that him in your Avatar?  Beautiful head, it actually does look a tad American.

Yes...my avatar is my dog. This is another picture of him. He is only 5 months old so we'll have to see how he turns out.

If he were my pup, I'd try everything and see what happens........

Conformation can be fun...

GSDCA Specialty is not for the weak.

Schh training builds great teamwork and bonding......

The obedience is good for all puppies.....

Who knows, you might have the next crossover!

Nice straight back   he is nice size..  He may be a little plump..kind hard to tell the way he is standing...watch his weight and keep him slimmmmmmmmmmmm......

. Get busy and have fun...do not listen to those in the AKC groups...do what you know to be right and seek  some good advice from  German breeders who show.

YR is right!!
Put him in and have fun. Do not be disappointed if they do not even look at him up tho. They would not know a good German Shepherd if they saw one. If it's not an egg beater, afraid of his own shadow dog with American lines, they just make fun of people with German Lines. OR has it changed?

I went to ONE GSDCA Specialty, and it was my first and LAST TIME that I went. I will never forget that Jim v Fiemereck was entered in the group with his progeny, and just because he was German lines, they booed him!  Not a very good lasting impression of the PARENT CLUB on my part.

UNBELIEVABLE!!

What horrible sportsmanship/manners, regardless of venue!

"If it's not an egg beater, afraid of his own shadow dog with American lines, they just make fun of people with German Lines. OR has it changed?"

When was this?  How awful.

My little experience is this:  I went to a 3-day GSD specialty show weekend last Spring.  3 days, 3 GSD only specialty shows and obedience trials.  I was entered only in the Obedience with my German show line male.  He's a nice dog with a good topline and a strong rear.  No roach, no tiny little rear end, no cow- or sickle hocks.  Definitely NOT "afraid" of ANYTHING.  I got a lot of compliments on his quality from the breed folks.  By the third day quite a lot of people came up to say hello - they'd either seen him in the ring or while looking at the catalog saw his breeding and knew him for what he was.  Some just wanted to see him up close, some just wanted to say how glad they were to see him there, and some wanted stud service (which I declined as the dog was not yet two and had not yet been x-rayed).

Granted, I was not showing in the breed ring, but nevertheless, a number of people made a point of being welcoming.

When was this.... When the GSDCA Specialty was held at the Purina Farms St Louis, Missouri.

Isn't it peculiar that the American Breeders with the American Shepherds knock the German  dog to high heaven, but when something MAJOR needs to be brought in, to fix what they screwed up in the first place, who do they go to THE GERMAN DOG! AND THEN....... continue on with poor breeding and interbreeeding with the same old lines waiting for the NEXT LANCE OF FRAN JO or KING DALLAS.

Dawn, the Am. S/L breeders still think their dogs can be salvaged. They actually believe that a one time breeding to a german dog will overcome the issues from 64 lines to Lance. And I'm not knocking Lance.

SS, do a little research on when Fred Lanting judged the GSDCA National. He gave a high placing to a "German" dog and was booed loudly from the peanut gallery.
