Ok, apparently GSDs can have the mutation. That would have been great to know before I gave immodium to my dog.

oops, my dog at the time was having "projectile" squits. After 3 trips to the vet, no solution.

I guess it is safe to assume he did not have the gene.

Please strike my suggestion for immodium.

I'm not sure how prevalent it is. I have a collie and all you hear about from collie breeder's is "don't feed ivermectin!", etc. because of the mutation prevalence. I've never even seen it on a GSD health site before now. Maybe it's a new development, or only in certain lines? My GSD also had the projectile squirts and I was desperate...cleaning the walls with a mop is never fun. :p

dick van pattens natural balance venison & sweet potatoes works for my girl with malsbsorption etc problems....rarely need to add tylan powder, even when i add small amount of canned food to kibble ( 1  can  divided over 3 days..)....poops are formed but "soft" inside, so need to use pooper scooper to pick up... & also kinda have a funny  smell to them.......

pancreatic enzymes made her worse---not sure if due to adding all the extra water to prepare. &/or not finding the right combination of canned food added to kibble & dosage etc...

vet wanted her kibble to lowest in fat content & i think higher in fiber?...can't remember as it's been over a year now...

my girl came to me on 2/14/08 weighing 50-52 pounds @ 1 1/2 yrs  old... & is now 78-80 pounds  & holding .

best of luck...
