VKGSDs

I'm not a breeder so having a dog that is a breeding prospect is more of an "icing on the cake" thing for me, it's not why I get a dog.  To be honest, when I found out he is missing a tooth I was almost relieved I don't have to pressure myself (and my finances) to do all the show stuff, breed surveys, etc.  I'm not going to put a false tooth in and mess around with ethics, the tooth that is missing is a DQ/eliminating fault. Not saying I'd consider him for breeding even if he were perfect.  I do own his sire who I've used for stud a few times (this is the only litter on the ground, waiting for confirmation of another breeding that we did via AI - fresh chilled) and I hoped to get a male from this litter I could keep either as a pet for myself or as my next sport dog.  I still prefer his sire better as far as breeding and overall temperament and he is only 5 years old so still "breedable" (plus I'm considering collecting and freezing him soon), but I'm happy with what I got from this litter considering what I wanted (I liked the dam far more in person than I did in pedigree). He's already doing great in sport and if anything, we are basically holding him back due to his age.  We can move a few more steps further with his training now that we know his body is sound but still have to really limit and pace him.  I do flyball and agility right now, will not be doing Schutzhund with this puppy (or if I do, I won't start him until he's around 2 years old probably).

Since the tooth was broke off;  there is no reason you cannot still show him, get a letter from your vet and carry with you that the tooth was there;  got broken off in an accident...

YR, shame on you.  Cement a tooth in.  Teeth Smile

I think you are misunderstanding.  The adult tooth is *missing*, there was no break of any of his adult teeth. This is a DQ/eliminating fault in any venue for show or breed survey. If you break or lose an adult tooth you can use an x-ray and vet letter at a show or breed survey.  A missing tooth is another matter and something I take pretty seriously.  A dog would have to really impress me to breed despite this fault and as much as I love this puppy and think he has amazing potential, that's not the same thing as being a great breeding prospect.

He broke his puppy tooth several weeks ago and the vet said since we already had an appointment for x-rays, he would pull it out at that time.  I'm assuming if the adult tooth had been there it would have forced the broken puppy tooth out several weeks ago.  Other than this tooth, he's had all his adult teeth for over a month.

Nan:  Nothing shameful with cementing a tooth in or a bridge. lol   Humans have them . MY husband has 5 cemented teeth .called a bridge..Has had them for 21 years..

Dentist for dogs can do the same thing..I misunderstood also.

I now understand why he is not breeding. HE has the sire and is happy producing from him what he wants in a pup to raise to WORK..

NOT sure why no tooth , but  if it never came down I guess it is a fault.

Baby teeth have to fall out and there should be a replacement...

Bt again, cosmetic ..

I have dentures..I got my front three knocked out by Bear Jerome...you can see him in the pedigree section...big giant came at me and missed the kong and raised up ..I chose to not  have a bridge..rather have a whole mouth full not something in top of my mouth..cemented or nailed or what ever  they do for permanent teeth ..

Beside my orthodonic surgeon has a Bear Jerome half brother and that surgeon  is the best looking ManTeeth Smile in Tyler Texas... I chose to lay back and take it all in..for as long as it took to remove them all and come back for my check up.

OH sorry VKGSD I did misunderstand.  Thought the ADULT tooth broke off;  NO I would also have to be totallty in love with a dog with a missing tooth to use for breeding, however, does not affect his working abilities or mental stability.  Good luck with him.  Nan

Yep, that's how I see it too.  Doesn't matter as far as work/sport.  In fact it just saves me possibly having to repair a worn tooth later on ;)
