After talking to a WL knowledgeable person, most WL are usually 63-65cm for a male and 57-59cm for a female but this does vary.  In my car, I can usually can fit an 85lb GSD mix in a XL crate.  I don't have the exact crate size ATM but it's pretty darn big.

I have this for my car. http://www.petfenceusa.com/zin-16419.html?productid=zin-16419&channelid=FROOG#.UvPKifldWSo  I've used it in 2 different Jeep Grand Cherokees, a Honda Ridgeline, and a BMW X5. The X5 was the smallest in the back. I used to fold one seat down or just put the crate horizontal. Honestly, I only used it when I had multiple dogs in the vehicle that I was worried about a fight with. The last thing I need is to be driving down the hallway with dogs fighting in the back seat. LOL  The nice thing about this crate is that it can be used as a shipping crate if you put the handles on. The bad thing is their 120lbs is a JOKE. They must mean a super fat Labrador who SHOULD weigh 60 but weighs 120, because my 76lb female GSD barely fits. It's perfect for my Pit Bull and is his regular, every day crate. The company is good; they have replaced the door for me once because they deemed it "escape proof" but my dog showed them otherwise;-).

BTW, I did not pay that for my crate. I bought it from a gun dog supplier and paid less than $600, if I remember correctly. It was several years ago.

I have the same crate, but, the larger 5000 model.
It has worked flawlessly for me with several different dogs and puppies.
I think the Pet Fence people are building the shipping cost in to the price of the crate and then they tell you "free shipping".

Take a look at Elite K-9 also. They have some good crates for decent prices.

(Just as an aside, if you own a Cayenne Turbo, is Kustom Krates really out of your price range?)

I too have the biggest one, or at least the biggest one they made when I bought it, which was at least 5-7  years ago. There is one bigger, now. Other than replacing a door, it's held up very well. Being a small female, I love that I can grab it from the front bars and carry it easily in and out of my truck (benefit of very light aluminum). I also like being able to easily secure it for the RARE occasion that I put it in the bed of the truck as opposed to the backseat. That has only happened a couple times, as it makes me a nervous wreck to have dogs back there, but I feel better when I can chain it in securely, as opposed to strapping down a plastic crate that is more likely to come apart on impact.

I've recently gone through this same exercise.  This is a well made crate for the money: http://leerburg.com/1165.htm

United States or elsewhere. I am assuming the OP is in GB but they have a lot of choices for small cars.
This is the crate I have ...... Owens 55033.......about the cheapest decent welded crate you can buy .......$500 if you go to a dealer and order through them and wait for them to get a shipment, else you pay the freight.  38"(long)  x 24" (wide) x 30"(tall)

Also the folding one at Elite K9, a friend gives me a good report on that one. I would consider but 22" is a bit narrow for my taste (for the big one)

I have the Zinger Wiinger 5000 crate for Bosco. Bosco is a large male GSD- 93 lbs (very lean), 26 inches at the shoulder, but the crate is more than large enough for him. I bought my crate from K9 Dynamics in Ontario (excellent customer service). The crate is easy to secure in the back of a pickup truck (truck has a cap).

Nancy, nope Im here in the US.  But most of the economical crates for SUV, or specific car makes are out of the UK or EU.  Shame, I think thats an untaped market here in the US.  Most if not all crates here in the US are square/rectangle.  Great if you have a Pick Up truck, Van or Surburaban.... or if you are willing to loose all your space in the rear.  I did find one out of Sweeden and I was lucking enough that they sold on Amazon. I found via link submitted by a member here, I tried to open it but my iphone wouldnt do it due adobe flash....long story short by trying to get find out more about that one I found this one.  I just got it today and will put together tomorrow.  It has 70 degree angles on front and rear allowing it to slide right in-between rear leaning seats and forward angled rear hatch.  I am going to leave roof top off when I put it together to allow his head to take up the full 33" of head room in the rear vs the 27" of the crate.  The crate will be used for the car only and I dont he can get out  that 6" space.  I will post pics when I am done.
