Look at the difference between the book and the actual movie ... This is supposed to be the Official map of Gotham published in the book called "The Dark Knight Manual".
The Official map of Gotham published in the book is SOUTH HINKLEY !!! SANDY HOOK is clear in the movie and they clearly pointed to it. The change of plan was deliberate !!! This is some CREEPY stuff !!!

Were they unsecured in the house?
Were they locked up and he over-powered his mother and took them?

His mom had five guns and the ones the shooter used were obtained legally .
