I personally think chemo does much harm and would most likely be more supportive if physicians were more open to alternatives. I know that many herbs have just as much ability to kill as traditional meds, but I have found for the last 25 or so years of using them, far less killing of the body, mind, and spirit than traditional meds that kill everything leaving the patient barren for ability to fight anything else that comes along.

One of the most common chemo drugs, vincristine comes from the vinca (periwinkle) plant.

There's a lot of chemical warfare going on in the plant world! Fruit trees produce cyanide in their roots,  which can prevent fruit growers from planting new orchards where the old ones have been until all the old roots have been removed or rotted away. Weeds such as goldenrod also produce toxic chemicals to prevent other plants from growing nearby. Walnut is also very toxic, and horses bedded on shavings/sawdust containing walnut often get sick and develop severe skin problems.

Many of our dealiest poisons (arsenic, cyanide, curare) come from natural sources. 'Natural' does NOT mean safe!

Yes I am well aware that many traditional meds are derived from plants and just because they are plants, does not mean they are safe to use even topically. Guess its hard to convey my years of working with herbs and safety on a forum board. Thanks Starchar for sharing your story. Barb

Bhaugh, I guess I wasn't clear enough-- not questioning whether or not YOU know that a lot of traditional or alternative treatment agents can be dangerous, just was taking the opportunity to remind others that there are chemicals in natural agents, too, so the term 'chemotherapy' is not restricted to the high-power, commercially-made oncology drugs...although if you don't accept the concept that treating a neoplasia of any sort with virtually *anything* technically IS chemotherapy, because even if you're 'treating' the neoplasia with plain old water, it's because you're looking for some property of the water--the hydrogen, the oxygen, a mineral that's present in it, SOMETHING *chemical*--to have a beneficial effect toward healing the neoplasia.  Organic chemistry is STILL chemistry.

Did you miss the part about my using pokeweed extract with my own older (12 1/2- 13 yr old) bitch to attempt to slow the progression of a metastatic mammary cancer?  Or the part about being involved in a trial of an injectable pokeweed mitogen as an immunomodulator to treat an aggressive oral melanoma?  Who the heck buys pounds of dried pokeweed root in hopes of finding a lab that will produce an injectable form of a pokeweed mitogen for use in battling a cancer that has moved into the lung, other than someone who is open to the opportunities that alternative treatments can hold?

So no, I don't think you're off-track for trying alternative treatments-- but I do find it odd that given all your experience, you were already questioning the efficacy of the DMSO when you'd only used it 3 times, as that seems a rather short treatment interval to be expecting a reduction in the size of the mass...in that window, I'd think it more than encouraging if the mass just hadn't made any additional progression.  And you asked about efficacy info for DMSO in treating a large mass on the face, so that's what I responded to-- I have not found anything in writing to support it's efficacy in that application, anecdotal or not.

I have seen impressive results with the use of cryocautery in treating difficult lesions, especially those in odd locations that did not lend themselves to conventional blade surgery, which is why I mentioned it.  I do hope you're able to identify some form of treatment that can arrest whatever it is that's harrowing his sinus cavity, so you get many more happy years with him. THAT I believe ALL of us can agree on!

Yes I did catch the pokeweed and others you mentioned and Thank You for sharing that with me. Ive never had to use DMSO so to be honest maybe I just wanted someone to post that it was that mircle I was looking for. I know that isnt realistic but one can hope right?

I reminded myself this week that it took awhile to get this way and it isn't going to go away overnight. Ive been having decent success with one of my homemade tintures and Ill take a look at the pokeweed to see if its something that will work. I do appreciate Hexe that you have taken the time to post and actually SUPPORT alternative treatments. If I sounded bitchy, I must have been having a bad day.
