keep a close eye on your dam. keep taking her temp twice a day for the next week.
if she's acting just a bit off, take her to the vet. #7 or a placenta may still be in her. if she acts depressed, does that heavy quick panting or has any type of contraction, get her to the vet asap

eating after whelping is touch and go because they usually eat the afterbirth, they usually get nasty poop for a day or two and also don't eat much.

congratulations on your litter, enjoy!

Thank you for all the well wishes!  Mom is doing great for her first litter!  I finally got her to eat a normal meal about 30 minutes ago.
This was the weirdest whelping I have had... it wasnt until the last two pups that I could even tell that she was even having contractions.  If it wasnt for her licking when the next pup was about to arrive.. I would have never known it was coming.  My other dog did all the 'normal' things... paced/panted for the first hour, nest/dug up her bedding, stretched out and showed visible contractions and slight moan along with them.  However, she was a much more laid back dog.

New mommy is worried to death about her babies, but I suppose she will soon relax.  I hope she can get some rest... lord knows she needs it.  We did lose one puppy, the third one was still born and was a female.  I ended up with 6 total.  All sables, 4 of them very dark. 4 males, 2 females.

Here's a pic of the babies... and I have a question.  This bitch's mother is going nuts over these pups... she wants to get in the pen and help clean them.  Her daughter doesnt seem to mind her nosing in, but is it a bad idea?  I have only let her visit inside the pen once and it was a very peaceful event (photo of that below too).  I would never do it unattended... but should I do it at all?

Thank you so much for sharing this.  It's like having grandchildren.  I get to drool over the pictures and you get to stay up all night with them. They are so beautiful.

In a few days I think the mother will change her mind about visitors. I wouldn't chance it, if it were me.

The "grandmother' is literally driving me CRAZY.  She is in another room with me constantly whining to get in with the pups. I don't know why.. just a great mother.. she always was.  I don't see her daughter (the bitch of the litter) getting aggressive with her... I actually feel like she appreciates the help.  But not making a habit of it.  Grandmaw's just making ME crazy.

I have a dam that wants to take over puppy raising every time she sees a little one. Its what she enjoys.

There was a picture here of a mom & grandmom swapping pups as both had a litter...maybe it was Mirasmom's picture? Anyway she had no problems...but there were 2 litters. Were they good together before she whelped? I certainly wouldn't leave them unsupervised, but a visit, maybe on a leash, should be OK! jackie harris
