i do realize these are all spectacular working dogs, thats why i used them as examples.
I'm actualy asking because i am trying to explain to another person with a showline, what the difference is when you look at the pedigree of her present dog to a working line. Many showline breeders around here are declaring their dogs equal to the working lines in working ability.
guess there is just no easy way for a really new person to know, other than to see any VA in the pedigree.

When I was a newbie I discovered the show lines are usually fluffier and black and red and have a more humped back look. The working lines tend to be sables and have Sch titles. IPO, etc. and straighter backs.
working line is different than working ability.
working line is different than working ability.

I totally understand what you are saying..... well..... any newcomer who wants to understand the GSD breed has to be willing to do his homework and watch and learn for about 6 months before they will realize what is the truth and what is the hype about both show and working lines.... simply reading the pedigree is not going to be enough at all....That is not to say you cannot have good working ability in showlines.... you very much can.... but most show breeders will often give you a very skewed picture of working ability....
My own position is that if the newcomer is not willing to do the due diligence then I for one will hardly make any effort to correct him/her of their misconceptions.
The difference in working ability between the 2 lines is both structural as well as psychological...... showlines have been bred for looser ligament structure and this looseness impacts how they jump, how they land, how they sit, how they down, how they corner at a high speed run and how they spring forward. To add to the looser ligament structure is the larger size of the average VA dog frame.... and that impacts working ability as well as the length of the dogs working career.
Having raised both show and working lines I can tell you that sometimes you feel that the two lines are no longer the same species let alone the same breed..... but the easiest analogy between show and working lines would be to compare a Toyota Prius to a Porsche Carerra.....
Both are cars but that is where the similarity ends....
