Gsdpack, your absolutely correct! People blurting out ridiculous price like 1200 is an insult!! Let's see how much value they put on their dog after all that time and work!!!

Okay thank you for all of the insight.  I would agree $1,200 is insulting for a dog that has more than basic sit, down, etc.  I would be embarrased to offer that amount to any working dog person for a well bred dog with training; with or without titles.

LOL. I've gotten offers like that on dogs and I just have to laugh. They always seem to be from people who want to breed them, too. Um, ok...you want a "foundation" female of excellent quality for how much?! Add a zero and get back to me. The justifications for the offers are equally hilarious. "Can't see the dog in person" (ok, so come to my house...), "Too much training- prefer green" (ok, well buy a puppy then)...and the list goes on. The people who don't see the value in the dog likely wouldn't be able to handle her anyway, or at least that's been my experience. They are inexperienced. Don't take it personally, Hedi if you get some silly offers.

As far as health checks, does this dog not have the "normal" requisite health checks done for a dog of her age and breeding?  So what if she carries DM? Breed her to a non-carrier. I've asked repeatedly for pedigrees on DM dogs and no one seems to want to cough them up. I think it would be really helpful but I think it would show a trend that no one wants to admit to, so I think that idea will likely never get anywhere. If the German working line dogs had all these DM problems, then I'll bet they would test. You have to show someone a reason before you're going to get this widespread testing. How many imports are DM tested? Mine certainly haven't been. You can't expect people to do all these tests for problems that they have never seen and call them irresponsible for it. I disagree with trying to make Hedi feel guilty for not having her German import DM tested to sell her. When it's mainstream, then get on her case for not doing it. As of now, her dog has all it customarily "should" be tested for at her age and customary for her lineage.

Hedi, I would say don't take less than $3000, and see if you can get closer to $4000. You may have to include shipping if you go higher. I truly don't think anyone should be able to buy a dog with that time and effort, xrayed, with excellent bloodlines, for less than $1500 more than someone can buy a puppy for. The only time I have sold them for less at that age and quality was to a wonderful, local home where I would have continued involvement with them and the opportunity for future breedings.

Sorry Hedi:  I thought you were the one buying.  Just trying to get you a good or reasonable deal.  Yes a 2 year old bitch; HD/ED normal; raised and fed and taken good care of by you, I would pay $4,000.  Yep to me that would be a fair price.  Would of course prefer at least cardio and DM clearnaces for her future but new owners could do that.  BOL in selling her.  Nan

PS:  And YES, working lines do have DM.  Go to OFA site and confirm.

DM test are very cheap and easy and should be customary at this point, import or not

I think it will be interesting, several years down the road, to find out how accurate these DM tests are anyway. I am just sick to death of it being brought up as a negative on every single dog posted who isn't tested. A few years ago, hardly anyone had heard of it. Now, it's all the rage. So many misdiagnosed dogs, so much overdiagnosis, so much paranoia, so many discrepancies in test results and actual status. To penalize a young import for not being tested is just asinine. When in Rome...

How much of a DM problem is there in Europe?

Sorry, Hedi, to derail. This makes me CRAZY when people put American "standards" on import dogs and penalize them and their owners (you) for not doing something that simply isn't done there (yet)! If you want a DM test and you want to buy the dog, I'm sure Hedi would have it tested for you. Problem solved. $1200 bucks because the dog isn't tested for something that is not customarily tested for in its country of origin is downright insulting. Sorry, Nan. I know this is a big thing to you, but that's not logical reasoning to impose YOUR AMERICAN standards onto that dog and basically say she's worthless.

I agree that 3500 -4500 would be very reasonable for that dog,IF that is the line you are Interested in.Especially if you are looking for a serious competion dog. I like to see lots of Sch 2 And Sch 3's in the pedigree. You know pretty much that there is good work ethics behind the dog And that someone didn't just go for the minimum for breeding.VERY NICE DOG !

by Nans gsd on 14 June 2012 - 16:06

Well Jen take it however you want;  it is not for me, it is for the breed.  DM is everywhere, not just the US.  And I hope breeders understand that it is now very reasonable and reliable and is just a cheek swab or I believe can be a blood draw for some tests.  Great days  Nan
