The thing is that without papers you don't know if the male is an anomoly or not. Just like a dog with great hips can occasionally throw bad hips, or a strong-nerved dog can throw the occasional nerve bag, and a top sport breeding might throw a couch-pet or two, it's possible that not-so-great bloodlines can produce a great dog. You don't know what's behind the male. His phenotype might not necessarily reflect his full genotype. That's why we look at bloodlines and have pedigrees in the first place-- because the dog in front of you isn't the whole genetic story. We all know someone who looks nothing like their parents, but looks exactly like their grandfather or cousin.

Hi, Todd!! Thanks for the clarification! I would try to touch base with people in your old ScH club and they can help you.....maybe come with you to evaluate the parents and puppies if you REALLY have your heart set on this litter. But, I am being pretty honest when I say...pet shop sire may not be the way to go. Like Emoore said, you don't know the genetics behind the dog and what he may or may not throw.
Trust me, I am not some pedigree purist by any means! My girl came from an established breeder of over several decades but has a poor pedigree by sport dog standards. Breeder did not title or breed survey most of her current dogs so people might cringe at my girl's pedigree. She was one of the orginal importers of DDR dogs in my area. And, she DID cull ruthlessly; has tons of puppy buyer testamonials over the decades; and has bred dogs who did go on to title with their owners. So, she knows her bloodlines and what they throw. I felt like I could trust her judgment despite her current dogs lack of titles (as she aged and ran a business she didn't title anymore) and I also talked to a couple breeders who have established kennels using her dogs as foundation dogs. So, I could see parents, cousins, aunts, uncles, etc of the puppies. Thus, I had to make my own decision and decide if the risk was worth it.
But, something inside of me cringes at this litter. So, they got sire from pet shop and have a well bred dam and want to breed them? Why? They have no history on the genetics behind the sire.
However, you should follow your own gut and check all health records on parents.
Maybe more experienced people will chime in!
Good luck with your decision,
Sara

I agree with what some others said - big red flag that the male came from a pet store. Even without a pedigree, I would think it is safe to assume that the pedigree would not be good if he came from a pet store. I cannot imagine why anyone would even consider doing such a breeding.
The female you posted is pretty, but so are thousands and thousands of other females around the country. Nothing that special about her if she is untitled and not proven in any way other than being a pet.
Personally I would not even consider a litter like this. Due to the lack of registration, but also due to the lack of information/testing done on both parents. The fact that the male came from a pet store should be a huge deciding factor IMO.
But that is just me.

Do yourself and the GSD a favor and look into rescue dogs If you are not concerned with papers, you can probably find a better dog than you could ever buy and know what you are getting.
