I would pay between $7,500.00 to $10,000.00. Your best friend, constant companion and protector is worth at least $1,000.00 a year.

Duke,
I consider my dog a good dog for Police Work.
I look for dogs with high prey, high defense drive, self confident, no environmental issues, social yet civil. A high level of natural aggression. Good hunt drive, sure under gunfire. We have a whole process or system for testing potential dogs, it hits all of the areas I'm interested in, except tracking. I believe any suitable, high drive dog can be taught to track.

I can't believe intelligent people would equate quality with price.

Moons,
You often get what you pay for, but not always.

Why is this so hard to believe. People make choices everyday on things and equate price with quality. For somethings you have to and others you don't.
I agree with Slam...more often than not, you get what you pay for.

Definitely they are not worth $65,000+ for a grown one or $5,000+ for a pup.

Duke,
jim , what do you think is the reason they are hard to find
It's is harder because of supply and demand. I am also rather picky when selecting a PSD, the dog has to convince me that it has what it takes.
So many dogs are sold as detection dogs that many vendors / breeders in Europe can sell dogs for detection work and they are happy. From waht I hear lately, when guys to evaluate dogs and say they want to "test" them in bite work the vendors can say, NO. I can sell my dogs for detection work and the bitework is not necessary to test. Some vendors don't even want you to do it. When looking for PSD's these days the going price around here is $6500 to $7,000 for an imported green dog. The green dogs I see lately are "greener" than ever. Less training and less exposure to things. I tested about 20 dogs a few weeks ago to find 1 we bought. The one we chose was a young mali, 11 or 12 months, but is a good fit with the handler and is really fantastic. Based on what I am seeing for PSD's I'm leaning towards Malis and DS's.
I am going to be looking for some new vendors for our next dog and we'll see how it goes. For myself, I have no problem finding a good GSD to work.
