With Breeds like the Tamaskan etc... there is no more to hybrid wolves
by Sunsilver on 05 April 2012 - 17:04
Wolves are naturally shy. My friend's BIL had an Italian wolf he used for SAR. They are an endangered species, so he had to have a special permit to keep it. He was the only one who could handle it. It was scared of other people. If a dog approached it, it would run and hide. If the dog continued to follow it, it would attack and kill.
Hybrids can be dog-like or wolf-like, depending on how the genes sort out. They are generally EXTREMELY high energy (a wild wolf will travel 40 miles in a day when hunting!) They are accomplished escape artists. Cesar Milan did a special on problem wolf dogs. One hybrid had trashed its owners' back yard. It escaped numerous times, and the local animal control said it would be put down if it escaped again. They had to keep it in a small pen, then electrify the wire of the pen, to keep it from chewing its way out!
What a life for the poor animal!
S/O on this board rescued a hybrid, then managed to get it into a sanctuary for wolves and wolf hybrids. It cleared the 6' fence he had for his dogs like it was nothing!
Can you imagine how popular you would be with your neighbours if you had a wolf dog running loose in the streets?

I only asked because it has become a big debate amongst me and my friends and I wanted to see what other people thought as well.
I am a massive fan of wolves, as wolves not pets, and while I would love to be able to see a full wolf up close and maybe touch one, i would never want to own one.
The reason I asked abpout look alikes is because one of my neighbors is trying to get the town selectmen to force me to get rid of them because they 'look too much like wolves to dogs'. I've come across a lot of people who think that breeding dogs to look like wolves will make them act like wolves.
I love my dogs and I love the look of wolves, I even have photos I took of a pack in British Columbia while visiting a friends family.
And yes, Dogs are more dangerous than wolves in the wild, in fact most domesticated predators are more successful hunters (cats are a good example). I've studied every fact on wolves I could get my hands on since I could read.
Also I use the name Big Bad Wolf because that was a nickname I earned in highschool after I took on six people for beating up a friend. The teachers called us a 'Pack of Wild Wolves' and I was their 'leader' so the students started calling me the big bad wolf. and no i didn't win.

Crappy quality, I know, but this was my first dog, Tornado, who was a GSD/husky/wolf. I'm not sure on the percetages or anything, but she was what she was. She was a good dog, but VERY hyper, difficult to train, etc. But she was also very HAPPY, and friendly as all get out. She stayed at my grandparents, who wound up having to build an 8 ft pen to keep her contained due to complaints from the neighbors. She was also a car chaser. When my grandparents died, we had to get rid of her unfortunately, and lost contact with whoever had her.
Definantly not dogs for everyone, and I'd probably not own one again. I'd definantly not reccommend getting one to your friend though, with a little one on the way, and agree with you that a GSD or even a golden would be a better match.
As for the lookalikes, love 'em! My GSD in my avatar gets mistaken for a wolf (people around here are just morons), and her nickname from my grandma is "Wolfy". A sable I could understand, but she is solid black. Ah well.

I have a WL sable GSD bitch, Jenzi. When she barks at the other dogs (if they wind her up or f they're playing roughly with each otehr) she screws her nose up at the same time. She shows a hell fo a lot of her gums. She slants her eyes when she does this adn having pale tan/yellow eyes makes her look even more wolf-like, particularly when she puts her ears at a certain angle.
She is very often mistaken for a wolf, although to me, she just looks like a dog. I've had both the local police and the RSPCA at my door because they've had reports of there being a wolf on the premises!
I love the GSD breed, particularly the sables. I will always have WL sables and if they look a little wolf-lke, so be it. I wouldn't choose a dog because it looks like a wolf (those breeds are not my preference) and at the same time, I have enough respect for the wolf to leave well alone and observe from a distance.

From left to right - Jenzi (my WL sable GSD bitch, 2 1/2 yrs old), Yiannis (my B&T male, 3 1/2 yrs old), and Zane (B&T male, 4 1/2 yrs old).

Here is Jenzi playing with Yiannis. Had I taken this picture a split second later, you'd have seen a lot of her gums as her lips lift so much when she does this.
