It works both ways with handler errors in the UK apparently.  A video showed an officer releasing his dog to apprehend a suspect but apparently he did not give the dog any commands so the dog went for a fun run on the street.  The suspect was running down the street and as the dog approached he slowed and started to lay down but when the dog passed him and kept running the suspect started running again and got away.  The last frames of the video showed the dog running out of sight down a street with other people walking and the K9 officer was in pursuit of the dog.

Where did you see that video? Bubba

I'll see if I can find it but it was along with some French police k9 squads showing off their Mals when one did his best to bite his K9 handler when he couldn't get a bite on the bad guy/decoy.  My take from all of those videos was that the K9 handler has to be on his toes and carefully use and target the dog or bad things can happen ..

Dear bubbabooboo:  Let me introduce you-- this is tinyurl, which will take that humongous link you just posted and make it a nice, short tidy little one.  tinyurl is your friend.

Yeah, guess that was the UK.  Pretty unusual for our K9s to be that
much of a wash-out !  (c/f  the OP Daily Mail article - which btw I have
several questions about, but 'never mind' ...) .  Although, the officer / handler
in Bubba's link wasn't up to scratch either - had a chance to grab the
suspect and fell over his feet instead.    : (

Good thing these incidents are rare, or our plods would be an international
laughing-stock !!!

Those of us living in the UK are fully aware of how much this daily newspaper likes to exaggerate and sensationalise any story to attract readers. It is well renowned for it and generally referred to as Daily Wail.

Not taking it away from the poor chap, I accept he has been bitten but not to the extent the paper wrote about. I wonder how many shark attacks the surgeons have treated in central Yorkshire...

This dog was in the UK, his handler was on one of my forums and apparently it is not unusual for a newly licensed dog to get confused, but they wise up after some time on the street.  The dog in question went on to become a very effective police dog and also the sire of numerous police dogs apparently.

Good point Spooks.

Same point as Spooks raises about how many shark bites
the surgeon had ever seen occurred to me.Sick

I think a shark might have ripped his arm right off.

I'm surprised the dear ol' Mail haven't sued me by now,
I've referred so often on the net to how they get caught out
lying time and again.  Wouldn't surprise me if they had
recycled this story from ages ago - it seems undated.

Good to hear, Margaret, that the daft dog came good in
the end !  (Now, what about his handler ?Teeth Smile)
